Um this is literally only about money lmao. This has diddly to do with what consumers want. It’s that tenet was such an abysmal failure and was so expensive to make. The studios need to try creative moves to survive. If the data was in favor of waiting for wide theatrical release, they would.

A move like this is as greedy as any other.

Except they’re not charging extra nor pushing release dates further and further to ensure higher profits so, idc seems way less greedy to me than $30 per movie on top of a streaming subscription

True, but in times like this, no studio is going to get the amount of money that they used to. HBO Max desparately needs subscribers, so that's probably why they're doing this.

I agree with that I just don’t think it’s greedy even if they want subscribers! Amazon needed subscribers, sold BTW at 0.99, good for consumers :vegas:

Another possibility for this move is that they may increase the prices on streaming service subscriptions in order to recoup some kind of profit. I’m no finance guru but the money has to come from somewhere if Hollywood wants to continue on financing these elaborate projects.

I mean, it's definitely good for consumers, but decisions like this are always about the money. A side effect is that it helps consumers like us, but I guess internally, they saw that this was the only feasible way for them to get any revenue, so they did it.

HBO Max is also like the most expensive streaming service, so they want as many subscribers as possible.

Today the studio behind some of the biggest blockbusters in the world has announced that its entire 2021 movie slate will follow the model being established by Wonder Woman 1984 on Christmas day: they will launch in theaters and on-demand on HBO Max simultaneously, available in 4K HDR and free to subscribers in the US for one month, before continuing their theatrical runs domestically and internationally (as with Wonder Woman, no details about a similar limited window has been confirmed for international markets, just that they will continue to receive standard theatrical releases). This includes massive titles, such as Dune, The Matrix 4, and more—a list of the studio’s releases is below:

The Little Things (January 29, 2021)

Tom & Jerry (March 5, 2021)

The Many Saints of Newark(March 12, 2021)

Reminiscence (April 16, 2021)

Godzilla vs. Kong (May 21, 2021)

The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It (June 4, 2021)

In the Heights (June 18, 2021)

Space Jam: A New Legacy (July 16, 2021)

The Suicide Squad (August 6, 2021)

Dune (October 1, 2021)

Elvis (November 5, 2021)

King Richard (November 19, 2021)

The Matrix 4 (December 22, 2021)

Sherlock Holmes 3(December 22, 2021)

Judas and the Black Messiah (TBA 2021)

MACRO (TBA 2021)

Malignant (TBA 2021)

Mortal Kombat (TBA 2021)

But... why?

I don't know about the U.S but cinemas are open in other countries. And it has been said that most of the countries (that bought the vaccine) will be vaccinated by summer, I don't get the point of not releasing the movies on the cinema from summer forward

it says they will be released theatrically simultaneously, but this will decrease the number of people going to cinemas even more if they can watch it from home as soon as it's released, and I'm sure illegal streaming sites will get those high quality versions just as fast. I'm so glad they are still getting theatrical releases though, The Matrix is one of my favourite films and this sequel will be the first I'd get to see in cinemas
