That said, just because Katy chose to do so doesn't mean she deserves to be vilified – she's not telling anyone else they need to do the same, just saying that's what she did. (Though you could make the claim that by posting this on social media, she is trying to encourage her followers to follow her example.) She is obviously operating from a place of privilege, and it probably would have been best for her to keep this choice to herself. I mean, after the 2016 election, how many Trump supporters reached out to family members who voted for Clinton to see if they were all right? All I recall from four years ago was a lot of gloating and being told to get over it/f*ck your feelings, plus a lot of misogynistic language used to describe Clinton and racist epithets used toward the Obamas. I can also remember Trumpers making fun of those of us who wanted recounts. I am grateful that LG hasn't made a post about extending an olive branch to her Trump-loving father. I’m not trying to drag Katy bc I am a big fan. I just think she could’ve conveyed what she wanted to say in a more conscientious way. She has a right to say whatever she wants on Twitter...but that means she should be willing to take on whatever response that comes with it. What I get from that tweet is: we're in this together, let's put our differences aside and make the most out of the situation like grown-ups. But I guess it's up for interpretation. This election was SO divisive, I've seen how the politics of the last four years have really tested relationships, families, etc. So I do understand the notion of sending love and spreading kindness after the messy past administration. But like others are saying, Katy has a duty as a politically-involved, cis, straight, white celebrity to lift up marginalized communities, not just tell everyone to give each other a ****ing hug.
