I see Katy just wanted to send a kind message for people living in a divided country, being part of divided families etc. Hate will get us nowhere. But this tweet screams privilege.

Its just kind of silly to think it wouldn’t cause some reactions, once the importance of this election goes beyond... it’s more about human rights than anything and its not that simple to just call a relative that doesn’t want your rights given to you and conciliate.

This. You don't overrule the top of the pyramid by being compliant. This is exactly why violence is needed for minorities to get their rights : the fact they're minorities flat out means they won't win any legal battle using democracy, unless privileged people join them by the kindness of their heart or whatever. It's been shown time and time that conservatives DO NOT have the empathy required to side with minorities without being forced to. We HAVE to force them. And if you're such a kInDNEss PuNK, you'll prefer the option of cutting ties/scolding your conservative relatives til they get tired of it over a revolution or something.

I'm sorry, I don't like Katy at all and I feel like the tweet was unnecessary but I have to post something about this hot topic. Politics should NEVER destroy families, it should NOT be that much of a big deal especially if your relationship with your family is good. Just because a person might vote with someone else doesn't mean that person supports everything that that candidate is stanning for, they might have their own reason why they voted for that person. My mom voted for someone who I believe to be really bad in my country, I was disappointed yes, but I would NEVER throw her out from my life because of it, she's my mom at the end, without her there wont be me in this world. I don't know exactly how things are going in US but in Romania, we are staying really close to our families even after when we are suppose to go on our way.

I refuse to believe you’re a serious person. So are you suggesting we as a society use violence against people we don’t agree with and vice versa? And can you point to examples of the time and time again you speak of where conservatives showed empathy towards minorities cause they were forced to through violence?

French Revolution, Stonewall Riots, Civil Rights movement (thinking of the Black Panthers), and many more. At some point you gotta shake up the deaf conservatives and scare them because they do NOT care about others until they're forced to.

I am not a Katy fan and I don't really care about what she tweets, Gaga on the other hand, I am a fan and am glad that she hasn't posted something like this. I think probably a lot of us are going through this, all over the world these days, since a long while now, but these kind of remarks from celebrities aren't helpful to the problem. I also don't want to add my opinion on Gaga's dad and her own relationship to him that has gone public, it's not right for me to judge and I am sure that Gaga has been dealing with this same stuff. I don't think these stories about them are useful to the public. Gaga can do as she wishes with her family, same to Katy and hers, but the world doesn't need a lecture from them about this, the same. Maybe they can stop informing twitter next time they have a personal unnecessary thought. Lana too. Yes, they can post as they wish but then don't be surprised when they get simple backlash. These are interesting and trying times.

I haven’t done specific research on this topic but I don’t think that what you’re saying is accurate. Violence doesn’t change anyones mind. What actually happens is that attention is brought to an injustice and people already on that side become more vocal and are moved to speak up/take action. If anything, as was seen with the rioting that took place during recent protests, conservatives use such violence as a reason why they need to vote republican to keep them safe. I truly believe that this issue is one of the main reasons why Republicans kept this election so close when it should have been a landslide.
