Like why was France showing pictures of a respected figure on government buildings, for what..., to incite something?

Is that a "if she didn't wear a skirt she wouldn't have been raped" kind of bs ?

I’m proud of this dad for turning his son in...too often nothing is done until it’s far too late

He did the right thing, both for his son and for others.

its really not LOL why don't you quote my entire post instead of a small excerpt... you could have bolded that part. I'm against all forms of extremism whether its religious or nonreligious. Let's respect all people and don't tell me there was nothing wrong with what France. I live in Canada and could never imagine my government allowing that to happen to minorities.

We can’t live in peace because people are literally decapitating people in the name of their religion.

What a horrible world we live in... Hopefully some severe measures will be taken against these terrorists and religious extremists.

We DO NOT stand by murder in the name of a deity.

and which social institution is that? i've never been to a mosque or read the Quran where it tells me as a muslim to kill anybody. I remember in the Rihanna thread where ppl were being Islamaphobic many of us agreed that religious extremists and non-religious extremists, on both ends, are problematic. Like why was France showing pictures of a respected figure on government buildings, for what..., to incite something? And why are these "muslims" beheading people. At the end of the end innocent people are being targeted and dying in between all of this.

What I meant is religion is not only an abstract set of rules, it's a social reality (thus, an institution). What people do counts a lot, not only what is written in this or that holy text. You can never say certain religion is peaceful without looking at how its believers conduct themselves. If there are violent groups fed by the more general creed, the leaders of the creed itself should acknowledge that, stand against them and sever those ties. Otherwise they're being complacent.

And I'm not sure I understood your comparision between showing a cartoon and beheading a person. These two are not comparable at all. No amount of mockery could justify this act. I've posted it before here: we should always be able to ridicule any religion, because unchecked religious institutions are nowadays a threat to peace, stability and the secular state. Given too much power, they create their own laws, in practice parallel to or sometimes even above state laws, and that endangers anyone wishing to live in an open, tolerant and peaceful society.

If you are talking about the drawings it is satire drawings. It is allowed by law to mock ideologies, religions and ideas and that includes prophets of ideologies, because at the end of the day a religion is not factual, it's a belief and an ideology. It has been done with Jesus many times before, a drawing called "Le diner des cons" with Jesus sitting at a table. Translation would be approx "Dinner of dumbasses".

It's not our fault if religious fanatics decapitate us. I understand being offended but I cannot comprehend to desire to change this freedom very personal to French values which is freedom of expression for ALL. And theres a difference between hate speech & satire or disrespect

There is a difference between freedom of expression and systematic Islamaphobia which the government provides a platform for. we have freedom of expression in Canada but i can't imagine our society if everyone started openly disrespecting people and their beliefs. Unfortunately, it would turn into America and what we are seeing in France now. Mocking of Jesus doesn't justify this neither does killing anybody which I am also against! These times are already tough for everyone and we as a society need to stick together, division & mocking will only make things worse and i'm not condoning any of this but it's the sad reality of it

The government is trying to contain radical islam, that means having to close mosques where Imam preach radical islam, illegal islamic schools, or radical islam associations. That's not islamophobia. Defending satire drawings is not islamophobia.

People don't go outside and mock each other; This is about freedom of expression for artists. That includes the cartoonists

The problem is not that but the fact that no christians in France felt the need to decapitate people because of the drawings of Jesus, which a lot of them depicted him as a "dumbass".

I think it's a bit pathetic to instead choose to say "let's stop any kinds of satire images and criticism of religions because xyz are offended"

No, you have to fight for freedom. People in the past they fought hard for you to have the freedom you have today and they didn't do it by saying "we have to stop the mockery" as much as it sounds good, you missed the whole point of what this represents. It's bigger than satirical drawings, it's bigger than people being "offended".

Period. On both sides. I don’t get this notion of ppl on this site trying to normalize disrespecting peoples beliefs as if that will make this world a better place.

Like aren’t y’all the same one’s dragging the republicans for doing exactly that in the political threads.

I’m sorry but mocking peoples beliefs won’t make society a better place and that’s really false equivalence and has nothing to do with freedom. The people of the past, whether it was POC or LGBTQ, stood up against systematic oppression not against being allowed the right to mock peoples beliefs clown.
