Not voting is such an ugly expression of privilege. Democracy should never be taken for granted. If you feel you are not adequately represented by the main parties where you live, cast a protest vote or spoil your ballot. If you're voting because you don't care, remember that there will be plenty of people in your country who are less fortunate than you and whose quality of life will be profoundly effected by the results of any given eleciton.

But let's not pile on someone who has recognised their failing, and taken steps to rectify it. Selena has made a really positive step, and I applaud her for that.

I'm not sure that necessarily means anything

I'm sure there lots and lots of people who are far from priveledged that could use a change in the system that nevertheless also don't bother to vote while on the flip side some who are priveledged do

Living in a democracy is a form of privilege IMO. Plenty of people around the world don't, and the ancestors of those who DO sacrificed a lot so that we can have a voice.

But I am more forgiving of people who don't vote who are disadvantaged and feel disenfranchised.

I'm glad that she realised voting is the right thing to do. I can't imagine getting angry at somebody over acknowledging a fault and rectifying it. You can't scream "VOTE!!!" and then get mad at somebody for realising the power of their vote and doing it for the first time. The fact she is not only voting now but speaking on it to those that follow her is only a good thing.

Rat Boy

Well at least she did it this year.

I don't get why people choose not to vote. :saladga:

Dr Fudge

I know a lot of good people who don’t vote. Is it right? No. But I think there is a lot of power in owning up to a shortcoming. I hope by admitting her wrong she inspires others who haven’t been voting to perhaps reconsider their life choices.

Been a cuff touple, a puff bupple, a tough couple of years.

Tbh when I hear this it's like when white people are like, "I remember when I used to be racist." It's fine to admit fault but like...why is it necessary to publicly do it? You're just centering being ignorant imo. It's not a cute look to say you didn't vote and had some revelation meanwhile thousands are unable to vote due to restrictive laws and policy decision designed to suppress votes. Like, keep your "I didn't think my vote mattered" to yourself and just encourage people to vote.

She could still speak to the disenfranchised crowd in other ways besides kind of way. Idk it irritates me to take up space during this time with this stuff. Like, just do more besides this little bit because just saying you were wrong, to me, isn't enough when you have vast sources of wealth and resources to do more, you know?

Like, I think what Gaga is doing is great. She's actively teaming up with orgs and using her time to help turnout. It isn't a huge amount of effort or use of her time, but it's clear she's giving and devoting some, and she doesn't even have anything to own up to. There's a LOT of groups that could use celeb endorsement and many aren't even partisan, simply devoted to turning out votes. I realize I'm doing a bit much here, but oh well :ladyhaha:

She is encouraging people to vote tho :huntyga: The entire point of this public confession was so she seems relatable to the many young fans who also might've not voted in the past. From what I've been told by some of my friends, the turnout of the 2016 election was bad. So under the guise of "y'know, I thought voting was pointless and what's the point... but now I know better" she's essentially using her platform to promote voting and make it the "cool" thing to do for her followers in a way that's less blatant than if she just outright told them to go vote.

That's why in my country voting is obligatory, or else nobody would vote.

If you have certain rights, you need to have some responsabilities.
