LITERALLY anything that isn't "hooky verses+big chorus+new hook for the bridge+explosive last chorus" is a flop – and when artists like Gaga and Dua deliver, you STILL have people saying, "but this isn't Bad Romance 2.0" or "why doesn't she experiment more/why can't she just make fun dance music, but WITH a chorus"

There’s some truth to that lmao. I don’t want to sh*t on anyone for not liking this album, of course you have the right to your opinion – but on this website in particular, there’s definitely a pattern lol.

I was so scared going into it after reading some of the comments on here, but I’m halfway in and I think it’s so good.  It’s everything I liked about Sweetener, and then some more, and then elevated. I do think some of the lyrics feel a little forced. But other than that, I don’t think she’s ever sounded so good, and the instrumentals are definitely the best of all her albums imo.

Real question: do leaks this close to release even matter anymore? Aside from being disrespectful to the artist (which it obviously is), it's not going to stop anyone from streaming it on Spotify & Apple Music when it's released. Nobody but the stans will download the leaks.

It’s a perfect mix between sweetener and thank u, next with some new influences like the 90s influenced “my hair” and “love language” which remind me of the Erotica album

Exactly, you don't like music like this, and this album appears to be very much quintessential Ari, so what were you expecting? It's not like people on this site are commenting, "Yeah, not my cup of tea, but best of luck to her!" It's almost always negative:

"boring" "doing the same thing again" "this is bad" "not expecting much" "low bar"

Of course you have a right to your opinion, this is a discussion board, that goes without saying... just as I have the right to comment about what is a consistent pattern on this website of bitching about artists when they don't EXACTLY match your expectations. I've been here since 2012 and I rarely comment for precisely this reason – a huge bloc of users on this website are unnecessarily catty and instantly defensive no matter the discussion.

Additionally, not sure how you extrapolated "dumb gay who only likes catchy pop" from what I said, but I myself am gay and I love catchy pop. That's not what I'm saying. What I'm saying is that pop stans on this site seem to uniformly dislike anything that doesn't follow at least one of these things:

- Has a really catchy (often melodic) hook

- Has an explosive/earwormy chorus

- Some sort of experimentation is welcomed

^ I put those down as factors because *I* like those things and that's typically what I look for in a pop song.

Since Sweetener, Ariana Grande is less a pop star than an R&B-trap-influenced vocalist. Which is why, as you said, a lot of pop stans might not "vibe" with this sort of music...

... and yet Sweetener and TUN are her two most critically acclaimed bodies of work. THAT'S the point I'm getting at. The comments are "bad" "boring" "repetitive", and I think that comes fundamentally out of a misunderstanding between the stans in this thread and what Ariana is putting out there.

You don't have to like it, but this album was never going to be ROM-style bangers. You don't have to like it, but it's a little condescending to call these leaks "boring" and "bad" just because you don't like more lowkey music. It's no coincidence that the songs from Ari people always like the most are NTLTC, Break Free, Bad Decisions, Bad Idea, Breathin, TUN, break up w ur – i.e. her POP songs, while uniformly disliking her more chilled out tracks and trap-influenced tracks.

Furthermore, it's not JUST Positions that people on this site bitch about. Just some major contradictions that pop up from the time I've been spent here:

>> ARTPOP: too experimental, not radio friendly

>> Joanne: man I really hate country-rock music, what is she doing, can she PLEASE go back to pop?

>> Chromatica: um actually I hate this chorus-less lead single, where's BR/Aura 2.0? ya actually not feeling dance music either, why isn't she experimenting more??? too radio friendly!!

It's like, the people want female artists to simultaneously recreate their past sound but ALSO evolve, and that's impossible. People are criticizing her for "repeating her past sound", but when she DOES experiment (Sweetener), the people on this site aren't here for it.
