The fourth planet from the sun, it is currently sitting just north of the celestial equator. That means it is almost perfectly placed to be seen from both hemispheres, and it is shining with brilliant intensity in the evening sky. Over in the south-west, quite close to the horizon because they are setting, Jupiter and Saturn will be the next brightest things in the sky. From the southern hemisphere, Mars will be in east-north-east. This is the closest it'll be for the next 15 years. And it means that stargazing is highly recommended as Mars will be bright, big and easy to see with or without a telescope. The day we'll be the absolute closest to Mars is the 6 October It's for this reason that space organisations take advantage of the short distance between our planets when these windows arise. Stanley Digaga 975 Posted October 6, 2020 Share Posted October 6, 2020 This proximity between Mars and Earth is use for the mission mars 2020 that launched on the 30th of July, it considerably reduced the travel time to Mars. The next step of the mission is the 13th of February 2021 when the spacecraft will land on Mars.
