I keep hearing Kings and Queens nonstop on the radio. She was being praised for her uniqueness.:fatcat:

People actually praised for her catchiness, not uniqueness.

What's the difference, they didn't say she is talented or artist of the century or have started something.

I legit thought payola is common in the music industry. Is it illegal?

It is. Most payola are done using loopholes or under the table.

Duas songs BELONG on radio & SHOULD be heard. tbh her label can keep paying.

A song belongs on radio only if people request it. The purpose of any music station is to deliver the songs people wanna hear. And for that, you don't need to pay. Payola is illegal, immoral, and an act of desperation.

Yes but if you read the article, there’s a part where they mention how they’re just told to play a song and they say “no one even listens to the radio anyways”.

Radio doesn’t always represent the demand a song has, that goes to sales and streaming bc it’s people actively listening to the song. Radio is supposed to be the songs the public demands to listen to, but it’s often times the songs labels pay for to get played tons of times. And they know people don’t listen to the radio that much, nor do they care if people demand for the song or not, but it’s points for the charts. So the label pays for a song to get played tons of times and the song climbs the charts due to radio points, even if its streams and sales are low. And this is obviously in the US charts.

Look at how ROM is performing on the US charts. Its streams are very steady, but radio paid it dust mostly, so the song can’t climb much. But now look at its position in the global charts and compare it to BMH’s.

No one is saying Dua isn’t a hard-worker, and she has had organic hits, prime example being DSN. The GP is there for her and her streaming numbers are great. But then you have songs like BMH that the GP obviously doesn’t care much for and is doing just ok on streaming but still climbs steadily on the charts up to top 20 fueled by radio points. And you know its by radio points bc it’s not very high up on the global charts. And it’s just cheating, plain and simple. There can be little demand for a song but it could still chart high if the label pays record stations enough to get it played constantly. It’s not just cheating, it’s illegal.

EDIT: For reference-

BBH100 US - BMH #25

                        ROM #37

BB Global - BMH #56

                     ROM #28

(And btw I’m using ROM as an example bc it’s obviously one people would be most familiar with in here, and very much showcases the disparity in radio vs streams and how much radio matters in the US charts)
