Rolling Stone Exposes Payola

This is so... :enigma:

In August 2019, a Zap text to one station said, “This week kill Panic and Ed Sheeran and put Shawn super power for #1 … Republic sweating me already.” On the previous week’s chart, Sheeran’s “I Don’t Care” was Number One, Shawn Mendes’ “If I Can’t Have You” was Number Three — Republic Records was promoting the single — and Panic! at the Disco’s “Hey Look Ma, I Made It” was Number Four.

As the chart’s tracking week neared its end, the station told Zap that Mendes’ single was set to play every half hour. But then Zap fired off another text: “It is too close and we haven’t jumped Ed yet. After 8 pm. Can we do every 15 min. No one will even notice. No one listens to the radio unless in car.”

I mean all of these artists are so radio driven so I'm not surprised; I do think that Dua has had genuine hits (DSN and New Rules) that smashed on their own but her team has definitely used payola for subsequent hits in the US. At least her music is good, can't say the same about most of the others :classy:

“Please don’t let Interscope dictate anything to you,” Zap wrote. “They don’t pay me ****.”

This is why fans complain Interscope is “not doing a good job” :ohwell:

It was pretty obvious :bear:

right, like how is it that Shawn, Halsey, Camila and this entire new generation of pop acts regularly hit #1 on pop radio but can barely sell an album :bear:

I was going to quote that exact part too.  No one can scream "payola" about Gaga anymore if she has another radio hit because her label clearly does not pay it.

I liked her debut album better than FN. :cryga:

I mean FN is pretty mediocre too but it's slightly better produced.

I mean we knew, but this is interesting nonetheless. Looks like this article is mainly focused on third-party promoters, which I don't know much about. It's all so shady :smh:

"It’s common for record labels to hire third-party independent promoters to help them push their songs to radio. These promoters are frequently compared to “consultants” or “lobbyists” for hire who leverage their relationships with specific program directors to try to convince them to add a song to their playlists.

When the New York Attorney General’s Office investigated the radio industry, it scrutinized independent promoters and scolded labels and radio stations for enlisting some indies as “middlemen” to “act as conduits for delivery of the labels’ ‘promotional support’ to [radio] stations, and help perpetuate the fiction that this support is not actually being delivered by the labels in exchange for airplay.”

I wonder if Ellie's is working :laughga: I really haven't heard from her in years, I know she released an album recently but she hasn't had a hit song since 2016.

Not surprised about Dula, it's obvious... Especially with BMH and now with Levitating!

Happy that ROM's "radiobattle" was clean!

Honestly yes I've seen BMH on the top of some charts and I'm like: WTF?? I think no one has heard that one since March.

Blown Away

Hailey Steinfeld is probably part of that list as well. Every time she has a song out she gets spammed on the daily, whew chile...

They shipped it, but it got shipped back

I hope the Grammys snubs Dua in all categories. She's so desperate that she even submitted FN to the dance category, although the rules are clear. And now this payola mess.
