I’m sharing a memory, not an opinion.  My recollection is that Britney was who Gaga originally had in mind.  I’m not saying she was picked “instead of” Beyoncé,  I assume she wasn’t even planning on asking Beyoncé or anyone else until the Britney plan went south.  Again these aren’t opinions or facts, these are my memories from eleven years ago.  But it would make sense that they would ask Britney to do it since they probably already had her vocals ready to go, we know she recorded it before Gaga. 
 

but PS: let’s not forget that Destiny’s Child opened for Britney
