It’s not as surface level as “dictatorship videos” — it’s about the fact that a literal Communist government currently committing abhorrent crimes with concentration camps is collecting info from other countries’ citizens under the guise of a “fun social media app”. Any user here bragging about how this suddenly makes them way more interested in TikTok is being willfully ignorant of the true scope of what’s really going on here. Yes I have, but the point of my post was that Trump drew the line when people faked to attending his Rally with TikTok, but that the info collecting is in the same reason

And the administration says it will do the same thing to TikTok, the mobile video service popular with tens of millions of Americans — but only after the November election. Friday’s news combines several different strands of politics, policy, and realpolitik: Legitimate concerns about China’s ability to exert influence in the US via consumer technology; American electoral politics; and links between US tech executives and investors with the White House. But the top line is straightforward: The Trump administration is getting tough with China by shutting down one important Chinese-owned app in the US — while keeping another important Chinese-owned app, with ties to Trump supporters, running throughout the fall. Department of Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross announced the moves in a press release Friday morning, and then spelled it out more explicitly in an interview with Fox Business News: “For all practical purposes [WeChat] will be shut down in the US, but only in the US, as of midnight Monday.” TikTok, meanwhile, will be allowed to keep operating in the US through November 12, so existing users of the app will not be affected. But Trump’s decree is meant to force Apple and Google to remove TikTok from their app stores — which means the service can’t add new users — and to prevent TikTok from updating the app for existing users. https://www.vox.com/21445193/trump-wechat-tiktok-ban-oracle-bytedance-tencent?fbclid=IwAR3S3jS3cR0xhh50KuLn9ukKHGh1K-PHD5URDAjI0_tPONg0B-ZAAqb7ePA What's buried in all of this is the implications of banning WeChat. WeChat is the lifeblood of communication and commerce in China now, and anyone who communicates with people in China or regularly travels to China is going to be significantly impacted by this. Even if you have problems with the Chinese government, this will affect Chinese Americans trying to communicate with family members and friends, as well as those of us who aren't Chinese and regularly communicate with people in China. (For example, I have people with whom I solely communicate via WeChat for work reasons.) I don't care about silly TikTok videos, but the banning of WeChat is another matter. (And yes, I already knew that WeChat is probably spyware.) She/Her/Hers

If you see only the surface, yeah tiktok is a social media for challenges, but actually is a growing algorithm of the biggest dictatorship on Earth. I beg you to read some well-written scientific paper on this, or even a proper article. Shouldn't we ban Facebook then as its been used by Russia to interfere with our elections? Trump doesn't care that Facebook has just as many issues. It helps him. That makes the TikTok ban self-serving and political.

Literally he doesn’t use it and yeah 13 hours ago, BadGurlMadge said: Yeah, but like TikTok has freedom of speech and as far as i have seen, i haven’t found any “dictatorship” videos there 13 hours ago, alsemanche said: It's because the Chinese gov has access to its information. Basically people are acting like China is the only one who has that kind of access to an app's user info and whatnot, as if private companies in the US (and everywhere else) don't do the same. But i guess it's fine when private companies do it lmao 13 hours ago, Scri said: Well, nobody would be that stupidily straight if they want to sell a product in the USA. The dictatorship refers to China Gov, which has already be proven many times to work with these apps (mostly actually it is the first financer), not to the app itself. They need algorithms able to track people, track what they do and where they are. Of course this could be use for good purposes (i.e. arresting criminals), but one has to be very naif to believe there is nothing more. Now, I know I could sound a little be a conspiracy theorist, so here some proper article (not written by karen-qanon.com ahah) How China tracks Italian people ENG https://www.theguardian.com/world/2020/sep/14/zhenhua-data-full-list-leak-database-personal-details-millions-china-tech-company ITA https://bit.ly/2FrDSO0 https://bit.ly/35He1Mp https://bit.ly/2FDscrp https://bit.ly/3knPGiR https://bit.ly/2ZIBQ2y https://bit.ly/2FHBhiu OE ENG https://www.theguardian.com/australia-news/2019/oct/15/china-has-built-massive-global-data-collection-ecosystem-to-boost-its-interests 13 hours ago, JK Rowling said: I wish more people understood this. I’m not saying it’s right or anything like that, but why specifically ban TikTok when we have a lot of American apps and sites that gather information too? 12 hours ago, littlepotter said: I truly am speechless over the amount of people so happy with censorship 12 hours ago, MJHolland said: TikTok banned "Black lives matter" and "BLM" hashtags and suppressed a bunch of videos on that subject They have a few scandals like that tbh Still kinda sad it's actually being banned lol what am I going to do to waste my time 12 hours ago, MJHolland said: They did it over the summer when things got bad in the US/World. BLM was banned on all For You pages globally for a while before they got called out. They've also been accused of suppressing plus-size and creators of color, on top of all the spying. An American company is still trying to buy TikTok so idk why the ban would go through this week. Hopefully young people are pissed a turn out to vote for Biden lmao 12 hours ago, Delulu Rogers said: Good riddance. Like many people have said, tiktok is very dangerous and poses a huge threat to security when all the info is going back to china. Let's not make the false comparison of banning one app the same as countries that are actually dictatorships. 11 hours ago, Regina George said: Anyone who is actually aware of what that app is doing and how dangerous it actually is will be okay with this. People defending that app clearly think it’s only about how annoying it is and that’s far from being it. Educate yourselves. 11 hours ago, Regina George said: Sorry but it seems like you are not aware of how dangerous that app is and how your info (if you’re using it) can be used in MANY malicious ways. Please google why that app and it’s privacy policy is really dangerous. 11 hours ago, littlepotter said: Nothing I found made it sound any more dangerous than any other social media app. I don't use it anyway, but that is beside my point in the first place, which was about censorship. Alcohol is dangerous. Cigarettes are dangerous. Lots of things are dangerous but not banned because humans are allowed to make their own decisions. If someone doesn't care that their data is being used, you can't force them. Plus, it's obvious that many of the people rejoicing for the banning of Tik Tok aren't doing so over security fears but because they just don't like the app. 9 hours ago, brownie said: You so clearly haven’t done your research The app was made by Chinese developers who purposely coded spyware algorithms into it to collect data on the people who use the app — including all the minors who use it. Any user here bragging about how this suddenly makes them way more interested in TikTok is being willfully ignorant of the true scope of what’s really going on here. Look I understand what many are saying and I'm not saying y'all are defending, but I've already said something similar, after what this app has done, is getting rid of this app like that bad? I know that's not what anyone is implying but aside from important things like spreading awareness through going viral, etc. I really don't feel any need of this app needing to stay and I'm aware of the majority who don't want this app because of its cringeness but for me it's more than that. Yes Facebook, Twitter, etc. are bad but like I'm talking about this app specifically. If this specific app is getting banned, is it really that bad if we ban this app that has done these following things? Does it really need to stay just because other apps that have done bad stuff too are still up? We don't need another one and it's not the end of the world if this gets banned. Everyone has already explained their thoughts and I agree but I also want to say how for me it's also like getting rid a portion of something bad, do you guys get what I'm thinking?
