If you see only the surface, yeah tiktok is a social media for challenges, but actually is a growing algorithm of the biggest dictatorship on Earth. I beg you to read some well-written scientific paper on this, or even a proper article. While I 100% agree, are Facebook, Twitter etc next or not? They hold A LOT of ethical and political issues as well (misinformation, a hotspot for alt groups, privacy concerns etc.). Facebook especially. Instead of outright banning apps/technology companies, I think more work should be done in regulating them. My fear of banning social media apps (regardless of country of origin), is that it sets a precedent that strongly remind me of authoritarian regimes in my region--the Middle East. I'm lucky enough to live in the UAE where things are stable, but Iran for example banned WhatsApp when it was used for protests to communicate and gather. Twitter was crucial in the Arab Spring demonstrations in Egypt etc. Even Wikipedia was banned in Turkey for a while as "propaganda." When the president of a country like the US--the "leader of the Free World"--does something like this, it signals for leaders in other countries that they could do the same if they wish with little repercussion. I don't find it surprising nor coincidental that Donald Trump being elected president was also followed by authoritarian regimes rising/gaining popularity. I think people really underestimate how much influence the US and its leadership have on the world, be it political or social influence. The US needs to promote the concept of the free market of ideas, especially when it comes to social media platforms and the internet overall. Going back to Iran, and I'm pretty sure when protests rose they went as far as shutting down the internet. I highly doubt America would do such a thing, but we should always be cautious. Democracy and liberty don't just turn authoritarian overnight. It's a slow process but it can and has happened.

Nope negotiations aren't done yet. Oracle is offering deals if i'm not mistaken, but nothing has been finalized yet. And yes very that, if you're gonna ban tiktok for security reasons, ban FB as well as like 90% of social media apps lmao. But I guess state censorship is fine when it's an app that people are bothered by for literally no reason other than they think it's stupid (as if snapchat,IG, twitter, etc. are the epitome of intellectual expression you know) Soft, soothing, and succulent

I was about to drag Trump for doing this absurd thing during a pandemic, but it seems like ultimately it was for good reason. Whether he actually cares about that/did it for the good reason is another story, I'm glad it was banned. The last I read, y'all been repeating that "USA is not the centre of this world" or something along that line in this cult site like a broken records, so which one is the truth? Were those just pressed Europeans or what? By the way, don't be overdramatic. USA will not be Middle East, we have first amandement here that protects free speech, literally no other apps been banned besides Chinese products that are deemed problematic. Also, Chinese spying is unlike Western world spying. Just keep in mind they are major allies to Russia and North Korea, USA need to protect their security and it is their preogative, especially when a lot of experts predicts that, shall it happened, the next world war will starts as cyber war first before shooting war. Besides, USA is not the first country that banned Chinese apps, India already did it beforehand. But it certainly wouldn't be the last, cos Chinese apps is that dodgy, mates. Take a look around. Even Japan now considering for the same action, and they are usually cool with all techie stuffs. (ノ◕ヮ◕)ノ✧*:・゚ ᶠʳᵒⁿᵗ ᵗᵒʷᵃʳᵈ ᵉⁿᵉᵐʸ (*´艸`*) ♡♡♡

pedrohemg 7,802
I hate that type of content. And now Instagram brought it to their app too. I'm being forced to use an older version of Instagram to get rid of those cringe Reels videos.

BLM was banned on all For You pages globally for a while before they got called out. They've also been accused of suppressing plus-size and creators of color, on top of all the spying. An American company is still trying to buy TikTok so idk why the ban would go through this week.
