I thot it would already 1 Mill something!! :bradley:

This is why we need promo! :gum:

And that's LOW? Compared to whom? Katy? Taylor??

You people DRAG Katy (50K unit first week, Smile) every single day, but never give Gaga (274K, Chromatica) the credit she deserves. Why? ;)

(For those who don't know, Taylor is 30. Critics refer to her as "pop princess Taylor S." She's closer in age to Ariana than Katy/Gaga, which is why her fan base is so YOUNG and enthusiastic!)

Katy's highest charting single in 2020 was Daisies (#40). Beyoncé's empowering Black Parade peaked at #37. Lil Baby's The Bigger Picture? #3.

Gaga is the ONLY "older" (as in mid-30s!) female artist with a SOLO Top 10 single (Stupid Love, #5) on Billboard 100 in 2020. AND a #1 album on Billboard 200 (274K units first week). She's the exception not the rule.

Yes, a STRIPPED DOWN album like ASIB probably would have done better because, hello, we're in the middle of a PANDEMIC. Nobody's dancing.

Would more promo have helped? Sure. A lot? Doubt it. :ladyhaha:

Katy's done NUMEROUS interviews and performances... Pregnancy reveal! New baby! You can't buy that kind of publicity. She's a trouper, tweeted from her hospital bed. Did that help??

Ageism/sexism is REAL. Not just pop but all genres. Not just music but film. It is what it is.

Wrong. We'll always blame the straights for this. :sis:

The lack of promotion during this pandemic is the reason and to be honest, I thought it would be far worse since we all know that sales are Gaga's most thing but guess what? I'm actually impressed because she reached that number mostly for her streaming aka what she was lacking a couple of years ago (and what we really wanted) on her last studio album and since the sales are going down every year, I think this is a big step forward for her.

I wouldn't say its anything to do with the pandemic in the context some of ya'll mean.

The pandemic effects overall sales, yes, but not Chromatica specifically. Look at After Hours and Folklore and Future Nostalgia in Europe/Oceania.

This album wasn't ever gonna smash like ASIB, no. We can see that looking at the steams/sales as they are - even without any promo, if it was going to smash it'd be having better longevity in US and Europe without promo. The album is pretty much out in the majority of music markets as of last week.

However, for literally no promo and the way she had to abandon the album, its selling in the same ball park as Joanne/ARTPOP and will probably finish above their sales. WW it's doing a lot better than those albums or slightly better. So that's fantastic. They had a great rollout.

The thing is, Gaga as a mid 30's female doing dance-pop isn't a hot commodity anymore - this is why the album isn't smashing, but just selling OK. The song with Ariana has been a good success (although a little front-loaded in some markets) for a reason - because that has a lot of GP appeal with a mega gen z streaming artist (beside being the good song) - whereas Gaga alone doing dance doesn't, she has progressed past that now and unfortunately pop isn't kind to women.

Gaga has to adapt in the music climate to do well and its especially hard with this genre. With that in mind, i am actually OK with this album's performance. I'd say it only needed to 6 weeks in the top 10 in the US to reach expectations, but you never know with Gaga, if she can line up a big promo spot she could get a 5th week top 10.

Gaga recently smashed hard with ASIB, a country pop tinged ballad sound. Any other artist would have seen that sticking and continued that sound. Gaga  could've easily waited till fall and collaborated with 1 or 2 male artists and capitalsied greatly on that success - however, she fed her core fan base with an amazing album, and it'll still sell decently, has a global hit, and has produced quality.

Don't get too hung up on her smashing, because all things considered, she's doing just about OK and the era isn't over.
