That song was huge, though. Though I didn't realise quite how huge. I'm still thrown at the fact that Marshmello has over 48 million YouTube subscribers. Seriously, he has two top ten hit, his albums flat-out don't sell (he sells so little you can't actually find his album sales) and who actually goes around calling themselves a Marshmello fan? If this isn't proof that numbers can be artificially inflated, I don't know what will. I don't for a minute believe all these hotshot producers are anywhere near as big as they claim. They're not on the level of actual singers.

You’re underestimating the streaming and subscribing power of children. Ask ANY child under 12 and they’ll tell you they’re a Marshmello fan.

Well all those awards, plaques etc... must totally lose their meaning once the artist starts to have tons of them. So although I don't think he meant to disrespect Spotify by doing this, I can understand that he doesn't care about it

why are y'all so angry about someone using something given to them as a joke, we all know that streams and stuff don't matter, esp on spotify

I'm talking about those electronic music producers who make a name for themselves by featuring the vocals of an actual singer. Calvin Harris, Diplo, Marshmello, The Chainsmokers, all those people. There's the occasional time they might sing if they're so inclined, but they rely on talented singers to carry the tune. I don't regard them as artists in the way that full-on singers are and they don't have loyal fanbases or even really have fans at all, just people who like chart music and only listen to generic "hits."

That's kinda shady tho.

Music production is extremely hard work.

While some of their songs have famous singers on them, all of those people you listed have a big fanbases, and are beloved within the electronic community.

It's meant to be be shady. I'm not saying music production isn't hard but it takes effort to make truly different electronic music and so many don't bother, they just chase that hit sound. Quite frankly, all those names have dwindled now, especially The Chainsmokers. A lot of them are taking bigger gaps between their work as well and are being taken over by the next big name. It's like they just have a narrow window of success and then they're dropped. There's a reason you really only go to see electro acts live at electronic music festivals, where there's a big bunch of people. Who wants to see the same person bop behind a soundboard for 2 hours? Some of them just play a setlist, they don't even play live. Apparently David Guetta once last-minute cancelled a festival appearance because once there, he realised he'd forgotten his USB stick or something. All the power lies in their electronics. Without them, they can't play an acoustic instrument or sing. Not what I'd regard as artistic or creative and it's always the biggest problem I've had with electro music.

Seems kinda disrespectful to 99% of artists who would kill to have that kind of streaming success

But that's not true.

I dabble in production, so does my roommate. We are both huge electronic music fans and go to both festivals and their individual shows. You are looking at things through your own feelings versus fact. Millions of people go to their individual shows. And many of them play instruments.

Gryffin who is a huge electronic artist plays live instruments during his shows.

And there's really no reason to shade electronic stuff versus instruments. Both take skills and effort to learn to do it well.

I didn't mind Drake doing it because he was just trying to be playful but Diplo's one just seems like an imitation of Drake's original idea.

Also watch Spotify stop giving them plaques.

It's more what the music represents to me. Then mainstream stuff, anyway. It's not so much about your deep down emotions or experiences, just neutrality and paint by numbers songs about love. It doesn't move me as most of it doesn't come from a genuine place. Oh, and a real lack of actual lyrics, sometimes it's just as little as one verse/chorus in the whole song. How that This Is What You Came For song became so big on the nothingness of those lyrics that anyone could have written in a couple of minutes is a tragedy. The fact there's actual lyric videos for it is quite funny!
