Everyone here is shocked at Katy's debut and here I am positively surprised that Taylor is still at #1. :flutter:

This tbh...it’s shocking to see how well folklore is performing, considering a surprise release.

Katy deserves better, this really is sad. That said I think this album rollout was horrifically mismanaged. She either should have stuck with droplets, OR - had no droplets, sat on NRO until they were ready, launched NRO as single one, Daisies as single 2, dropped a couple bops (Small Talk, also maybe Champagne Problems or Tucked) as promo singles and given us a full body of work. Kept it standard, rather than this piecemeal approach which wasted all the momentum NRO had.

i mean think of all the promo she did for Daisies; if it had been for NRO instead? She’d have a hit and better album numbers.

Sad for Katy, Smile is not a bad album at all, it deserved better.

Good for Taylor, she is a legend at this point, folklore is such a good album, I hope we're getting more videos :bradley:

that’s probably the most annoying thing. Posthumous albums are the one aspect of capitalism I despise

To be fair, they are both fantastic albums (for what they are). They’re not in my personal favourite genre, but they’re really good though

In the grand scheme of things, Katy has a baby, a seemingly great man, an album that she seems extremely proud of and she has a better outlook on the commercial side of the music industry, so as long as she’s happy, who cares.

I don’t super love Smile, some songs are in the best of her career, others are among the worst, but she says it was therapeutic so I’m happy for her.

Not Metallica beating Katy in 2020:bradley:

I don't even know one song by Pop Smoke or Juice World

Yes you do. You just don't know it's his.

And Pop Smoke died. This is a post mortem album. Those always do moderately well even if they are unknown.

Smile was a huge failure in roll-out. It's a step-up from Witness and going in the right direction. Better single choices and more cohesive visuals really would have helped it debut better. That being said, a #5 debut isn't terrible. Xtina debuted at #6 with Liberation and Kesha debuted at #7 with High Road, both girls really in the groove of releasing music they want and not entirely chart driven. Hopefully that's the deal with Katy.
