Isn't she at some kind of festival in the UK where this is normal?

I feel like it's only really cultural appropriation if you're using a culture for some type of gain or as some kind of trend, whether it's intentional or not.

Culture is meant to be shared. Everyone against sharing culture and mixing it with different cultures is sharing the same thoughts of the KKK to divide people and not let them mix up. :triggered: You are ignorant and blind if you can't see that hypocrisy.

Adele clearly loves Jamaica and its culture. She spent how long to get her hair done that way? Right probably hours.

I basically already answered these in my post on the first page

I disagree with some points. If you've ever been to Jamaica or the Caribbean in general, people actually put these hairstyles in tourists hair as a business. They're proud to share their culture. I think it's clear that she's celebrating the culture. It's not like she's wearing them with a Balmain dress on posing for paparazzi. Americans need to focus on the issues going in their own society and stop trying to fight battles that don't exist.

Well that’s why I just said that I’m not going to tell Jamaicans what to be offended over. But the backlash is not surprising and should be expected during these sensitive times. So she was ignoring that fact. It’s not a big deal to me.

As a black person, I think it's more tone deaf than it is racist.

You have to look at each case contextually -- there is no evidence to assume that Adele is racist.

But was it tone deaf for her to post this, given the current zeitgeist for black excellence? Absolutely.

I think there will be a time for cultural "appreciation", but definitely not now. Not while tensions are high and real change is pending.

I genuinely though it was a picture of Katy Perry with low make up.... btw, it's not meant to appropriate culture in order to make profit. It's not like she's serving an album with those visuals she just does it once.

It's important that as a white people we think of what we do and we make efforts to support and respect other cultures. though, that is sometimes leading to a lil excess.... Hope she's also been supported.

hello hello baby.

Tone deaf is the better word than what I used. I agree with this comment.

Mhhhh but I didn't even really ask anything :yennefer: (apart from how long it took to make her hair into that jamaican style bantu knot thing, but it was more of a rhetorical question)

No no

I was with you until you said this

this is never a good reason for any sort of behavior that others can/are perceiving as offensive

Adele is being accused of cultural appropriation for a new look she sported on Instagram Sunday. The hairstyle drew criticism on social media. people are calling her "racist"

She was in a Jamaican themed event in London, she wore a bikini with the Jamaican flag and decided to wear the hairstyle that goes with it. Jamaicans have commented on it saying this was nice. Case closed.

But I literally said that the context is that she’s at a festival where they encourage the sharing of culture which is what you said.

She doesn't look good. I won't say anymore than that because this forum is too sensitive. :lolly:

not everyone here is a sensitive snowflake :)

I agree she looks a lil weird in that picture, but she's also kind of a chameleon. the first thin-body pictures of her made her look like sarah paulson.

I was wondering why nobody said that, I had to double check the title to make sure it was Adele and not Katy Perry!

I mean, if you go to a festival of a certain culture, of course they'll let you dress up in their clothes and haircuts of that culture, it's part of the fun and the festival.

Hell, appreciate tight pants and tshirts were a “gay” thing at one point and I would LOVE for all straight men to appropriate the look lol. Moral of the story, at some point we have to see idk know the whole story???
