The 9|9|99 VMAs Explained

I thought it'd be cool to talk about the significance of this VMAs and its lasting impression on Gaga, all of us.

On September 9, 1999, MTV hosted the last VMAs of the 20th century at The Metropolitan Opera of House of NYC. The Met is located within the famed Lincoln Center for the Perfoming Arts, where the New York Philharmonic, the New York City Ballet, the Juilliard School of Music and other great art organizations, permanently reside.

It is also 10 blocks from Gaga's childhood home. She's spoken of taking songwriting classes there as a teen and watching dancers walk by.  I cant help but think that Gaga could've watched the red carpet in person then walked home to see it on tv.

Just like all of us, 13 yo Gaga would be watching and dreaming of her day in the spotlight. Just like in the opening of her performance!

If Chromatica is both a state of mind and a real place, then last night, via CTV, she broadcast glimpses of her past, present and future.

I f#cking love this women! :flutter:

I also made this thread for some/many of you too young to remember what a truly great VMA looked like. And, quite honestly, the place in pop culture that MTV fully forfeited.

As me any questions, because these vids are sending me BACK! :bradley:

This is how the show opened :bradley:

I remember reading one of those Gaga biography books a while back & I feel like there was something in there mentioning how she went to a red carpet show as a teen, it honestly might have been this one :bradley:

VMAs were everything back then.:bradley:

They sure as hell were. But you know what'll happen now right?

Gaga shows the way and pop culture moves forward. She has, yet again, set a new standard. She is correct that a renaissance is coming. MTV needs to cleanup their act to facilitate it.

This iconique performance! OMG 😭 Y'all don't even know!  I watched until this until my VHS tape warped. This was the night I fell in love with production design.

I remember watching the 1999 VMAs as a kid for the first for the sole purpose of watching Britney’s first VMA performance as I was obsessed with her at that time. That night was the pinnacle of pop culture for my childhood as we had Britney, *NSYNC, Backstreet Boys, Christina, TLC, Lil Kim with her boob hanging out, Janet Jackson and the list goes on from there.

I remember this day  My mom fed me mashed peas and rice and tucked me in for a nap at 1pm.

I also wanna talk about that whistle note. How could Ariana do that while also singing Rain On Meeeeeee?

The Rain On Meeee part that happened at the same time as the whistle sounds very much like Ariana. Which leads me to believe that the whistle was Gaga. Still, I can’t hear Gaga’s voice at all when it comes to Rain On Meeee.

Get the pinot ready, because it's turtle time.
