And Katy has never really changed her sound. Why is this relevant criticism now?

I think it has always been the go-to criticism of her work, by critics and other fanbases alike. It's why all her albums have such low scores and she never won any Grammys. People, fairly or not, kind of see her as the go-to example of a manufactured pop star.

Damn...i honestly don't know how she is gonna take this and knowing how obsessed she is about charts and success...idk what she can possibly be thinking rn...

Remember when ARTPOP was heavily criticized. Let’s support this queen. Never really over is one of her best songs. I’m hoping the album delivers. She does music for us to enjoy. Idc for critics opinions.

tbh something is really weird with this album cycle and era.. kinda looks like she's releasing album asap just to get out of the contract.

I know she's not an album singer, but she's an era singer, she's not someone who would do such an era like this.. something just feels off..

So sploosh your juice all over me you Riverboy

Not surprised but still gonna give it a listen when it’s out, I’m curious. I just had a bad feeling when she said she wanted to bring back the Teenage Dream sound and then the lead single suddenly becomes the fourth released song.

Why is it not? Don't get me wrong, Katy is probably my third favourite artist and I would consider myself a big fan but if you keep doing the same thing over and over again, it will just show yourself to be pale in comparison to other artists who go through the uncomfortable and artistically challenging journey of re-inventing themselves.

I have a theory that artists save certain material for certain albums and fill the years between with leftovers. For example, Lana Dey Rey released the masterpiece NFR after what was LFL (filler record after Honeymoon). I don't think Gaga does this though. Possibly with Chromatica to satisfy us after Joanne since it's very short and more diluted than the others.

Is anyone surprised? No evolution and/or originality at all. I doubt Katy herself is shook lol

you don’t have to re-invent every single time, it should not be a golden standard for women in music.

They have always been biased. Teenage Dream is an album full of feel-good pop anthems and deserved at least a 70. Oh well

You completely twisted Taylor Swift's words. Taylor was not saying re-invention is unnecessary for women, she's saying she had hoped male artists would be put on the same pedestal of being judged as women. Taylor essentially is still an artist that applauds re-invention, which is why she does that so effectively.

Saying men need to be judged the same way as women do =/= Artists do not need to re-invent.

Like why would we even encourage musicians to stay complacent? And why would Taylor Swift, someone who is so ambitious artistically, say something that encourages complacency?

I wish Katy would venture to a more mature sound perhaps country-like such as Whi You Love and TOTGA acoustic version. I agree than even though I know I’ll enjoy Smile because it’s quintessential/generic Katy sound, it’s time to change. Witness was not that big of a change if you ask me. It still sounds like the old Katy Perry trying to sound a bit different but still playing safe with the sound.

I think this was such a missed opportunity. She had the marriage with a huge movie star, her pregnancy and the whole Witness drama to talk about on this record yet she chose to make it all poppy and funny. It became unimpressive.

I love Katy though. She has always been my favorite pop girl besides Gaga.
