This is a great example of how she just can't win with critics or the gp. With Witness everyone hated it and told her to go back to her old sound and now that she has everyone wants her to experiment. sis can't win katy perry no GIF by Idols Global

It’s... not that deep :ohwell:

She’s been doing a bit whatever lately... Smile is by far her least cohesive release. The singles have nothing to do with each other. They’re mostly good on their own, but that doesn’t make for a great album...

I love Katy, I’ve actually enjoyed Witness contrarily to most people here. But it’s not hard to see why she’s not on top with what she releases these days...

You can’t blame the GP for not eating up Smile, Bon Appétit, Daisies, etc. the way they ate up California Girls and Dark Horse...

Sounds like the average Gaga fan.

Literally 😂: “we want a jazz album, we want a country album you sound so good in those genres! Gives us a rock album!”

Gaga: gives us a jazz album & country album

Monsters: “this sucks! We want the old Gaga we want POP MUSIC!”

wait till she releases a rock album :trollga:

No excuses are found. It's been known that the main reviewer of Slant is a Madonna stan, and he's biased towards Gaga's albums. You must be reaching thinking we're making excuses, lol :trollga:

Wha-

I don’t recall there being a lot of demand for a country and a jazz album.

I mean... I love Witness, I don’t understand the hate for it? Also, have you seen Bon Appétit’s YouTube views? The GP ate it up after the fact 😂 like wut... everyone slept on Katy when she needed us most & really did begin a new chapter & experimented with a different sound on Witness. I wish she would’ve built upon what she explored on Witness with her new album & continued to innovate like Gaga has done but she’s gone back to pop basics & though she hasn’t found a hit yet I firmly believe she will with at least one song off Smile. At least I’m praying she does. We need that 10th #1 hit!!!

You don’t?! Girl after the jazz duet with tony in 2011 & after You & I all I heard was “we want a jazz album, we want country” & even I was down for it & Gaga fcking delivered (which I’m happy about). After her Metallica performance people were saying they wanted a rock album. I remember very well 😂

What's so experimental about Witness? It's a basic pop record with some woke lyrics there and there

I mean, there were fans who wanted her to go down the more stripped down approach, but I remember the Joanne era getting massively hated on from the moment Perfect Illusion came out. Actually, I would say Joanne is more appreciated now than it was back then.

First off, she changed her entire persona, dropped the commercial candy cookie cutter pop act. Change #2 - on the album, the production is completely different & strictly influenced by 80’s/90’s synth pop/house music (which she only played with once before on Walking On Air). #3 - her writing habits, the way she constructed each song was different. Her melodies took on more depth (vs the usual one note chorus as seen on Teenage Dream, California Gurls, E.T., This Is How We Do). The form in which she wrote her lyrics were different. You could say it’s because she stopped working with DrL*ke (& you’d be correct) BUT she clearly set out to make a change & succeeded. Was it a success? In my opinion yes because she accomplished that growth whether or not people think it was for the better. Also, on Witness we heard new vocal technique, MUCH BETTET live vocal techniques while performing (mostly happened during PRISM). I could go into more detail by analyzing each track but I digress...

Well yeah, that’s what I’m saying lol I remember almost every Gaga fan I was talking with at the time wanted a country album but when it finally arrived people hated it. People still hate it, I constantly see memes where Joanne is the album being thrown in the grave/trash by the other albums etc. that’s my whole point though lol so many said “yas Gaga give us country/jazz” & then they hated both eras.

I was about to ask :selena:

I get that if you listen to only the singles you won't find that much of a correlation between them but she's already said the album as a whole is supposed to tell a story.

You can't judge it just by looking at a couple of songs imo

I don’t follow KP but that Harley song seemed like it was a different thing to her usual generic sound ......r&b I actually enjoy that song.

What I heard from witness sounded like in her lane
