TTU professors call for strict COVID-19 policies after students pack bar

"A packed college bar in Cookeville, TN is drawing concern from the local university.

"When I saw that video, it was kind of like the 'straw that broke the camel's back' is the saying, because I've been worried about this all summer," Tennessee Tech English Professor Andrew Smith said, referring to a video taken inside a full Revolver Country Dance Hall in Cookeville on Thursday night.

The crowd in the video is in direct violation of the governor's executive order, which states bars may only offer service to seated customers. News4 called the nightclub for an explanation. They declined to comment.

Beyond government enforcement, Smith believes the school should step in to discipline the students. "We've been trying to get folks' attention for weeks to listen to the students and faculty that are worried," he said. "We're the grown-ups in the room. We can't rely on the students to have all the best boundaries."

I place the blame on the bar. I work at a bar on weekends and we literally walk people to tables and tell them that the only time they can take their masks off is when they’re at a table. Wear a mask to go get a drink, go to the bathroom, etc. and we don’t let anyone congregate standing up. People listen- and I’m in a  college town so if anyone is going to not listen it’s these people 

Tell people what to do so that they can still go to a bar safely and they’ll listen. And if they don’t? kick them out

Exactly this! The rules are plain, and simple, and yet they still aren't listening. The bar definitely needs to step up too

I can't help but be judgmental towards these people who go to bars, stay there and interact with a bunch of people, in the middle of a pandemic. I'm having a hard time figuring out if it's because these people are selfish or they're just stupid af.

Tbh, it's probably a combination of both. They're in college. They know better than this, lol

Where I live, the police have really started cracking down on indoor parties and are issuing fines up to $2,000-2,200 to those responsible for organizing/hosting. It’s just wild to me how people are justifying their behaviour (those who host and those who choose to go). People really think it’s fine when they do something, it’s only wrong when others do it.

If people were smart in the first place we’d never have pandemics lol. This is just a part of human nature
