Which French words/phrases are you using in English?

I mean, if you go back far enough, roughly 80% of the English vocabulary comes from French. So, you could argue that we incorporate a TON of Francophone words all the time.

But on top of that, French was THE prestige language for much of the 1800s, so it's natural that most world languages have late borrowings of French words, too! When the entire world respects your language, they borrow from it. Sorta like how nowadays, English is the global "common tongue" so tons of languages borrow English words.

I adore French. I am a native English speaker (27) who started Spanish at 15 and I have an MA in Linguistics. I taught myself French starting at 23, and I started noticing all these parallels and universals of language. It's fascinating!

My FAVORITE French borrowing is probably "faux pas."

Avant-garde. But I was told I sound stupid using that word so I don't use it anymore. :neyde:

It's not really the way I pronounced it, cuz it was an online convo here. :laughga: I just said I want Gaga to have another avant-garde performance. Apparently, I used the word wrong?

A lot tbh. Dutch is my first language but I've been having French class for 8 years now. So it's very much present in my system

"Mais pourqoui"

"Je ne sais pas"

"C'est formidable"

These are just a few phrases I use a lot in conversations lmao

Épouser la nuit

Illusion Parfaite

Omg with my friends we used to sing Gaga songs but translated in French. We would go shouting in school "C'etait une illusion parfaite, méprise pour de l'amour!" or "I'm gonna marry la nuit!" that was so funny.

No, it's completely correct to say “avant-garde performance”.

If people laughed at you, it's because THEY don't know what it means/how it's used
