AntonTurnItUp 7,088
It was in literally all the male pop hits from the past decade. Started with Capital Cities - Safe & Sound (2012 i think?) Daft Punk, Pharrell W. & Nile Rodgers - Get Lucky (2013?) Maroon 5 with their album V (2014) Mark Ronson - Uptown Funk (2014) The Weeknd - Can't Feel My Face & In The Night (2015) Bruno Mars with 24K Magic (2016) The Weeknd - Starboy (2016) And much more... freebit 6,240
That's two different trends - one is a synthy 80s sound, mellow & kind of vapourwave-ish (Blinding Lights fits into it), the other is more upbeat dance music, with maybe some disco infusion - that's some Dua tracks, though Future Nostalgia is more 80s inspired IMO. For example, Physical is basically Patti LaBelle's New Attitude, which is an 80s song. I think Doja's Say So kind of expertly combines those trends & it feels fresh (The Weeknd and Dua's sounds are more ~nostalgic, doesn't mean they're bad). Too bad it's produced by Dr. Puke. I think it's a more accurate statement to say that BPM has increased and big sounding pop in general is back. Who brought it back is hard to say because all this music seemed to be recorded around the same time, so we can't really pinpoint who influenced who, or who started it. We could probably say that about music recorded and released afterward though (like Midnight Sky).
