It took a billion dollars for the Republican Nominee and Democratic Nominee to compete in the last general election. (2016) The candidates have staff and offices in every state and those staffers require salaries and health insurance/benefits. They pay for polling and surveys. Also, ads that cost millions and millions of dollars to run on tv, ads that go out in the mail, and ad buys all over social media. Then there is travel for a large staff and hundreds of campaign stops, events and rallies. The National Conventions usually cost millions, but this year it won’t cost near as much.
