Listen to SAWAYAMA by Rina Sawayama.

Hear me out...

I know it's annoying when you're constantly being told to listen to someone - I felt it, too, and actually avoided this album and artist for a long time, for some unknown reason - but this album is legitimately spectacular.

I don't think I've ever listened to a better pop album, minus a few Gaga records... which, could very well be my bias :bradley:

SAWAYAMA is so thrilling and so exciting and so unexpected... yet so, familiar.

In an alternate universe, this woman would be the biggest pop star in the world right now, because her work is just that good.

It's one of the only times I have listened to an artist who isn't Lady Gaga, and felt that rush of instant freedom and excitement.

DYNASTY, especially, is probably the song of the year for me.

I can't believe I only discovered Rina this week, and I want to save other people from having that regret, lol.

I listened to it.

schitts creek please GIF by CBC

but many people will probably like it.

That's so surprising to me - but, of course, tastes are entirely subjective.

I'm so glad you listened, though!

What's your favourite Gaga album, out of interest?

I keep meaning to listen, as I've only heard XS. Your post has inspired me to do it tonight!

Oooh, right, okay - I was probably preaching to the wrong person about Rina, then, lol.

I love TFM (obviously... it's Gaga's best in almost every way) - but it's definitely a straight up pop album. Great pop music, but it's pop through and through.

I think Rina is very experimental with genres. Sawayama fuses pop with heavy metal, rock, punk, dance... it's very eclectic and noisy, so I can see why it wouldn't be for everyone... especially pop lovers.

I didn't think Sawayama was BAD by any means, it just didn't click with me.

I appreciate all the genres she infused tho.

Imo, the 2nd best album after Chromatica of 2020

Oh, definitely.

I think it is objectively more interesting than Chromatica, but it - obviously - lacks the inherent star power and punch that a new Gaga record has.

They're both highlights of the year for me, and i'm so excited to see what Rina does next. I think she deserves a mega hit.

I like the album, STFU! and XS stand out from the rest and I hope she does something like that more in the future:firega:

Edit: How could I forget Who's Gonna Save You Now, the dance-rock bop we needed

I'm probably wrong

I got into her a while ago, but was a bit underwhelmed by the album. I didn't feel the need to go back to it, maybe I should and get a second opinion. But it didn't grab me the way some of her past singles did. I had a similar reaction to Brooke Candy, tho she's wildly different so the comparison is purely superficial: I used to stan hard the EPs and various singles, but the album was a huge meh.

YASS with the Dynasty stanning

That song is so epic.

I love the lyrics so much. I feel them... like, how a family's pain and trauma is a 'dynasty' passed on and on to the next generation. I need to learn more about her upbringing, and why her family has caused her so much harm. I mean, I'm pretty sure the song references suicide.
