Return of Saturn is my favorite album of theirs, it’s so underrated. Suspension Without Suspense will always have my heart

  Reveal hidden contents

Oh the pessimistic protection plan, moderation loving

I’ve been hardened by the circumstance, we knew this was coming

We get so far, and then it just starts rewinding

And the same old song, we’re playing it again

Suspension without suspense, intentions without intent

But I don’t want the love we have to end

Yes! It is my favorite of theirs and one of my favorites of all time. That song. :messga:

If he's a serial killer, then what's the worst
That can happen to a girl who's already hurt?
I'm already hurt
If he's as bad as they say, then I guess I'm cursed
Looking into his eyes, I think he's already hurt
He's already hurt

I said, "Don't be a jerk, don't call me a taxi"
Sitting in your sweatshirt, crying in the backseat
Ooh
I just wanna dance with you
Hollywood and Vine, Black Rabbit in the alley
I just wanna hold you tight down the avenue
I just wanna dance with you
I just wanna dance with you

Baby, I just wanna dance (dance)
With you (dance)
Baby, I just wanna dance (dance)
With you

Left the canyon, drove to the club
I was one thing, now I'm being another
Go down to Sunset in the truck
I'll pick you up if you're in town on the corner
Ah ah

Happiness is a butterfly
We should catch it while dancing
I lose myself in the music, baby
Every day is a lullaby
Try to catch it like lightning
I sing it into my music, I'm crazy

If he's a serial killer, then what's the worst
That could happen to a girl who's already hurt?
I'm already hurt
If he's as bad as they say, then I guess I'm cursed

I was just listening to California in the car and it really got to me. :udidnt:

Spoiler

You don't ever have to be stronger than you really are
When you're lying in my arms, baby
You don't ever have to go faster than your fastest pace
Or faster than my fastest cars

I shouldn't have done it, but I read it in your letter
You said to a friend that you wish you were doing better
I wanted to reach out, but I never said a thing
I shouldn't have done it, but I read it in your letter
You said to a friend that you wish you were doing better
I wanted to call you, but I didn't say a thing
Two, three, four

Oh, I'll pick you up
If you come back to America, just hit me up
'Cause this is crazy love, I'll catch you on the flip side
If you come back to California, you should just hit me up
We'll do whatever you want, travel wherever how far
We'll hit up all the old places
We'll have a party, we'll dance 'til dawn
I'll pick up all of your Vogues and all of your Rolling Stones
Your favorite liquor off the top shelf
I'll throw a party all night long

You don't ever have to be stronger than you really are
When you're lying in my arms, and, honey
You don't ever have to act cooler than you think you should
You're brighter than the brightest stars

You're scared to win, scared to lose
I've heard the war was over if you really choose
The one in and around you
You hate the heat, you got the blues
Changing like the weather, oh, that's so like you
The Santa Ana moves you (two, three, four)

Oh, I'll pick you up
If you come back to America, just hit me up
'Cause this is crazy love, I'll catch you on the flip side
If you come back to California, you should just hit me up
We'll do whatever you want, travel wherever how far
We'll hit up all the old places
We'll have a party, we'll dance 'til dawn
I'll pick up all of your Vogues and all of your Rolling Stones
Your favorite liquor off the top shelf
I'll throw a party all night long

Oh, I'll pick you up

Taylor is a better lyricist but I love Lana and I have never really liked Taylor that much so :lana:. But yeah.

Don't wanna kiss, don't wanna touch, just drink my ****ing coffee and watch 90's cartoons and hush

Lana is a better writer, but Taylor is a better lyricist. If that makes sense.

Get the pinot ready, because it's turtle time.

Lana and that's not even a moment for hesitation. The fact that Taylor says she's a massive inspiration for her own music should tell you all you need to know. Teacher is always better than student, surely? Of course, we know the more palatable one gets better critical acclaim and Grammys.

They’re both similar in their subject matter (relationships, relationships and relationships) but I find myself more drawn to Taylor’s style of songwriter. It feels more honest, raw, uncertain, tender and uncomfortable at times. Lana is style over substance.

Lana has written a lot of music that is "honest, raw, uncertain, tender and uncomfortable at times" too. Happiness is a Butterfly is the prime example of that. See also: Yayo, Ultraviolence, Sad Girl, God Knows I Tried and In My Feelings. I love all those songs but there's a feeling of discomfort when you listen to her give away a bit too much. I think Lana gets put into the style over substance category because she doesn't spill all her emotions all the time and is quite a guarded person. That doesn't mean that she's a lesser artist.

Both are excellent, but I believe Lana wins by a tiny bit. Although I think "All Too Well" possibly beats any of Lana's work, Lana's collective songs tend to be stronger in terms of lyrics imo.

Problem is Lana occasionally leans way too far into style/atmosphere so you get cringe/try hard lyrics like "He used to call me DN/that stood for deadly Nightshade/...yo soy la princesa/comprende mis white lines"....which sounds more like what an angst-ridden teenager might write in their journal while wearing Urban Outfitters or the thoughts of a Brooklyn hipster that believes David Foster Wallace is the ultimate genius. Granted, Taylor has her clunkers too but the occasional immature hook isn't quite as try hard.

"In the land of gods and monsters
I was an angel, lookin' to get ****ed hard
Like a groupie incognito posing as a real singer
Life imitates art
You got that medicine I need
Dope, shoot it up straight to the heart please
I don't really wanna know what's good for me
God's dead, I said 'baby that's alright with me'"

gods and monsters belongs to holy bible

I think both are really diferent

Taylor is more descriptive, she evokes memories and nostalgia better and is more upfront on what she's meaning to say, she describes people, places and events beautifully and makes us feel like we were there/remember similar experiences on our lifes.

While Lana is more poetic, does a lot of references to USA culture that makes her songs a little bit more dense to understand if you're not from the US, and describes feelings, people perceptions and problems more than Taylor, we can feel what's she's feeling/remember similar times where we felt things like that.

Both are great, but they have differences that doesn't make sense to compare (that's also the reason I think some people are being unfair to Gaga on this thread, Gaga is a great lyricist, but it's a lot different than Lana and Taylor)

I don't know how to write in english

Let’s take a moment to appreciate another stellar songwriter, Lorde.

This one really does get to me :bradley::

Baby really hurt me
Crying in the taxi
He don't wanna know me
Says he made the big mistake of dancing in my storm
Says it was poison
So I guess I'll go home
Into the arms of the girl that I love
The only love I haven't screwed up
She's so hard to please
But she's a forest fire
I do my best to meet her demands
Play at romance, we slow dance
In the living room, but all that a stranger would see
Is one girl swaying alone
Stroking her cheek

Also:

Please could you be tender and I will sit close to you
Let's give it a minute before we admit that we're through
Guess this is the winter
Our bodies are young and blue
I'm at Jungle City, it's late and this song is for you

'Cause I remember the rush, when forever was us
Before all of the winds of regret and mistrust
Now we sit in your car and our love is a ghost
Well, I guess I should go
Yeah, I guess I should go
