I personally listen to music that I enjoy or that resonates with me, and half of it is smaller artists or underground music that friends have gotten me to like or who I've discovered through another artist. But I like bigger artists like Gaga or Kylie Minogue or Madonna or St Vincent because finding their material was easier considering they have acclaim and large fanbases etc. Plus a song charting does not necessarily mean its good. Of course everyone has their definition of what a "good" song is, but some stuff like the most whack basic lyric-filled song like basic love songs or vapid songs like Bruno Mars' discography are nowhere near the underground artists who actually put vision into their musical work. I feel like a lot of bigger artists are only famous because they're good singers, but they are crap artists, their music is little more than feel good songs or relatable songs. There's nothing beyond that. Gaga has a few songs like that but I believe she is much more talented than a lot of mainstream artists and has more of a rockstar persona, where her albums have clearer concepts and artistic direction rather than " lets just throw 10 songs together on an album and go #1 for 2 weeks and do well" Link to post Share on other sites More sharing options...

While I it nice to see her be successful, I would still be here even if she didn't. 90% of the music I listen to doesn't even touch the Billboard charts. Outside of Japan, I will never see any of these things on a chart. I genuinely love Gaga for music and her aesthetics. Others wish to live vicariously through her.
