I wanted to make a thread discussing/covering the concepts of “the original LG5”. This isn’t meant to be Joanne shade or anything, but I’m bored right now and since we’re in the dark with Chromatica I thought I could divert my attention to something else.

What’s the difference between Joanne and “the original LG5”?

Surprisingly there are still a lot of people on the fence about whether there’s a difference or not. What we do know is that Joanne, aside from Angel Down, did not exist until 2016, when Gaga and Mark Ronson spent 6 months coming up with the concept of the album and writing the music. That’s what’s important to answer this question. Joanne as a concept did not exist until after they began working with each other, so the original concept of Gaga’s 5th solo album was not meant to be about family/her personal life in the way that Joanne is. What we do know is that Gaga teased the concept of the album in 2014 as her “operating” on her old self. What exactly does this mean though? Well, it seems that the goal for this album was, as RedOne stated, to “recreate” the magic of her past albums, most notably TFM. When Elton John teased LG5 in January of 2016, he said that the music was a return to her old roots, stating the music sounded like Bad Romance and Yoü and I. It’s safe to assume that the album was sonically meant to replicate her older dance pop work.

Topics explored on the album

It seemed to be heavily implied that the topics on the album would somehow revolve around darkness, with a focus on mythical beings. When Gaga began teasing the album in late 2014, she made a post about Vampires, as well as another about a witch. She could have possibly been teasing her roll on American Horror Story, although later we found out there was a leaked song title “Frankensteined” which belonged to the project, and ties into the concept.

Collaborators

Although we don’t know which artists were ultimately meant to be on the album, we know for sure that Gaga had been working with/contacted by the following artists:

RedOne (100% meant for the album), Diane Warren, Nile Rodgers, Giorgio Moroder, Elton John, possibly Adele

How far along was the album, and why did it get scrapped?

In June of 2016, RedOne said that they had originally chosen a lead single for the album, but plans had changed. Based off the lack of legal documents surrounding the album, it seems that the concept was secured and there were multiple tracks prepared (Which is why there would be a lead single chosen), but it was never officially sent to the record label. RedOne also confessed that he didn’t know where she was at musically anymore, and that the music they made together was amazing. Later he told an interviewer that she wanted to go a more “country” route with the album. Many people believe the death of David Bowie, Gaga’s biggest idol, resulted in the artistic change. It was also around this time that her engagement with Taylor had ended, which would have resulted in her wanting to write more break up inspired songs such as Perfect Illusion, Million Reasons, and Sinners Prayer. While Mark could’ve been added to the team to help add some last minute influences to the album, it seems ultimately that he influenced Gaga to change directions too.

If you have anymore tea to spill feel free! And again this isn’t an anti-Joanne thread so don’t start dragging her :bear: Ultimately I’m glad we got Joanne as it helped diversify her discography

I can't believe she changed the 2016 Grammys performance last minute. She was teasing something HUGE at that time. I enjoyed the Bowie tribute performance, but man...... what a disappointment. I really thought she was going to premiere a new single.

Also, don't forget that Gaga wanted to make darker music that was inspired by The Countess during this time!

The concept of that album was so good. To bad it never saw the light of the day. I mean who wouldn't love an album about darkness and pain. I'm not talking about the straights tho :neyde:

Love it when you call me legs, in the morning buy me eggs 🥚

I image that it was going to be this blood-fueled disco/funk record with dark undertones tbh

God reading this I want it so bad

The fact that descriptions of her two scrapped albums (more experimental ARTPOP and dark return to her roots) sound like they could be my favs from her is so frustrating
