androiduser 7,438
it definitely lacks the usual Gaga edge, and the songs have a very similar sound (which makes the album really cohesive, but not very varied like all the other Gaga albums) I enjoy the album, but overall it's too commercial for what I expect from Gaga. ArtpopAct2 2,672
I agree that it’s lacking the edginess that I love from her, but I don’t think that’s a factor of her losing her spark or anything. I think it’s just the genre of dance music that Chromatica is is pretty fundamentally different than what her older records were. It’s more light and euphoric. With the whole kindness punk thing, I’m pretty sure what she was going for. I think she wanted a really positive sounding record in order to emphasize dancing through your pain. BTW and was weird in that although they were pretty celebratory lyrically, the production was pretty dark and heavy-hitting. ARTPOP in particular was about dancing through the pain, but the production itself still showed that pain. with Chromatica I feel like she finally achieved that message. Some of her most personal and sad songs, but they sound so light and feel-good! before the cure and Chromatica, I don’t think Gaga ever had a “song of the summer” (in my mind, a euphoric and happy sounding pop song) because yeah, her old dance music was always pretty dark, very passionate and angry sounding at times. Now we have so many! All that aside, Replay definitely stands out as blending that older Gaga edge with Chromatica’s direction.

Glamourpuss 29,062
I actually think the album is perfect. I understand how some feel it lacks the edge we expect from Gaga but I think it's because we hold her to a high standard. Sometimes less is more and I think she's taken that approach this time. Instead of making it weird for the sake of being weird she's just focused on making a solid pop album. I think she didn't want to have an amalgamation of different themes and ideas that made it a non-cohesive mess that nobody understands like ARTPOP and it's era. When you actually think of each individual song and if they could play on the radio like Alice and Replay for example, you realise that she hasn't really played it safe. These are still unique pop songs that nobody else would release and they are interesting because they have a meaning and aren't just to be taken at face value. I think fans always expect her to come up with something new and create a new genre but she just simply wanted to make music that she could dance to and distract herself from the pain. When you think of it like that she didn't need to make it more extravagant, it serves it's purpose.

Twitter 14
I’m sorry but everytime y’all request something edgy or different this fanbase complain when Gaga does it. I feel like since this is her return to pop music album from the critically acclaimed ASIB. She wanted to play things safe, so maybe LG7/LG8 will be more Gaga. buzzkill 5,152
it's annoying that everything is taken as a complaint when people where actually talking and making some point about what they think.
River 116,212
btw the II+911 transitioning is one of the most edgy, rude, wtf moment in pop music, it's Gaga saying f-ck you all, if you don't see that, you really don't understand anything So sploosh your juice all over me you Riverboy

insight 2,429
If anything the album production is safe and referential. Edgy...not this time around.
thehanyo 4,251
Gaga has been very open and honest about wanting to reach as massive an audience as possible. She's been like this ever since Uptown Funk dominated the charts for a summer. That's why she scrapped the original LG5 and worked with Ronson on Joanne/ASIB. She legit thought A-yo was that song, but of course that didn't pan out, so she's leaned even further into family-friendly radio bangers with Chromatica (her first non-explicit album!), going so far as to work with Max Martin. That's why SL was the lead. She thought it was a guaranteed smash.
