3D reconstructions of Ancient Rome boats

Fiumicino in Italy is a busy airport, but 2,000 years ago this area was filled with boats—it was a large artificial harbor only a stone's throw from the ancient port of Rome (Ostia).

To tie in with the opening of the site's newly refurbished museum, Giulia Boetto, a CNRS researcher at the Camille Jullian Centre (CNRS/Aix-Marseille Université), has coordinated 3-D reconstructions of three of the wooden boats found at Fiumicino.

These boats, in use between the 2nd and early 5th centuries AD, were abandoned in the port, at which time, they became waterlogged and covered with a layer of sediment. These oxygen-free conditions enabled the boats to survive until they were excavated, almost 60 years ago.

By the end of the year, these 3-D reconstructions will be housed at the new Roman Ship Museum in the Archaeological Park of Ancient Ostia.

You know, as an Italian-American, as a European- as a Roman- this is really such an important thing for me... my ancestors you know- they would ride boats. And I’ve ridden a boat.

But tbh tho. But I've heard so many ppl talk about ppl in the past like they were so dumb and unacccomolished

 

Yeah I get there was some big social issues, abuse and ignorance (even more than now) and scientifically they were very limited in many basic things

 

But they still built civilizions, had complex philosophy and theories (yes most were way off but the point is they were demonstrating thinking and curiosity), came up with many useful inventions etc

 

Some ppl act like only in the last 150 years humans finally demonstrated any intelligence or enginuity and look down so much on ppl of the past with an obnoxious attitude of superiority

 

For starters the overwhelming majority of the population in 2020 are not scientists, mathematicians, or engineers.... we only know what we know scientifically because we are told by the few minds that actually research this stuff and share it with everyone else. Our intelligence isn't any better if u think about it. Most of us have done nothing to advance society
