(Friend has some connections – don't know how are where, as friend is a die-hard Democrat, but he's reliable.) If this is true, I would hope that it would hurt Trump, but I worry it would also hurt Biden. Not the kind of three-way we like to see. BUT, he could easily prevent either Biden or Trump from getting an electoral win. If Trump wins all the states he won in 2016, but loses Ohio, Idaho, Nevada, Arizona and Utah to Romney (the mormon states); and Biden wins the remaining states, we end up with this map: Since its a tie (no one has a 270 majority)--the House of Congress (the new one, sworn in Jan 3, 2020) will chose the President. Here's a paraphrase of my friend's claims (don't want to outright quote him verbatim): He said a friend of his who works on Capitol Hill told him there's a rumor that Romney will split from the Republican Party, at least temporarily, and make a public challenge against Trump for the nomination to the presidency. The source said that there will be nothing like it since RFK in 1968. If this does happen (and it's only an "if" – Romney is apparently throwing out feelers), apparently it will happen within the next month, since Trump is considered vulnerable right now. Romney supposedly is talking privately to certain Republicans about the idea of putting together a series of public speeches to be delivered on television that tear into Trump, Trump's presidency, and his administration, including: an attack on his foreign policy; an excoriation of his handling of the pandemic; reaching out to African Americans on the issue of police brutality and the forfeiture of responsibility of the Republican Party over the disenfranchisement of people of color; a similar overture to immigrants; and a bid to Christian conservatives that argues that Trump is morally bankrupt. He's rumored to be tapping into the support of the Republicans Against Trump and other groups who have some money, but most importantly, they have a wealth of talent in terms of political media pros and pundits. If he can win over these people, he will then make a pitch to Wall Street. The plan is to carry this out in such an obvious manner that Trump gives up and withdraws from the campaign, paving the way for Romney to take over the nomination.
