Netflix and Hulu have removed episode 14 of season 2, Advanced Dungeons and Dragons. In the episode, a high stakes DnD game is played, and Chang (Ken Jeong) arrives in pointed ears, a white wig, contacts, and pitch black makeup over his skin, under the guise of being a drow, a form of elves with night colored skin. Other characters immediately point out the racist implications of what he has done.

Creator Dan Harmon hasn't spoken out on the removal of the fan favorite episode, but Sony has announced their approval of the decision.

It’s strange that producers never thought that things like this was problemlematic. It’s as if they’re all just now learning about racism.

its strange that we still have to deal with this garbage in 2020 when everyone knew this kind of stuff was bad decades ago tbh

Isn't it actually a reason to keep it? like they're actually talking about how bad it is, so like in some sense, to talk about racism you need to show racism? like to show what happened in the holocaust you actually need to let actors play as nazis and say antisemitic things.

But I've never seen this episode so I don't know how really they are pointing it out that it's racist, so I'm just wondering, not justifying or something..

So sploosh your juice all over me you Riverboy

Ah ****...I’m not defending it but the follow up joke from Shirley was gold:

”So we’re just gonna ignore that hate crime, huh?”

Chang was portraying an elf, not a black person. Also, they talk about racism. It was probably the best episode on the whole show. They were probably affraid of backlash.

Honestly if you're offended by stereotyping you should just avoid the whole show. The whole premise is a white douche, a white "activist", a white scholar/ex drug addict, a POC devout Christian, a boomer, a POC Jew, and an autistic Islamic man becoming friends. It plays into the stereotypes heavily, but also calls those things out. You'll see it however you want to see it though.

I haven’t seen the episode, but isn’t the whole point to show how racist that can be? Again, haven’t seen the episode, but seems stupid to delete an episode that addresses the matter and discusses it, showing how bad it can be...

"Blackface scene". Weren't they using a mud mask? :air: it's a bit much, Hulu

Honestly. I’m so over cancel culture and being outraged by everything. Black face is horrible - I’m not denying that. But in the context of the show, it’s humorous and really isn’t that damaging.

Like should we delete “Gay Witch Hunt” from the Office? I mean it’s pretty homophobic... But it’s really funny and in the context of the show, it’s really not that offensive.

I thought that too although I just read the article and it explains why:

In the episode, Lorraine’s family finds Rose (Betty White) and Blanche (Rue McClanahan) trying a new mud facial treatment, and as they greet their family, Rose says  "This is mud on our faces, we’re not really Black."

I feel like all three cases listed here are different from typical blackface. In 30 Rock and Community, it's critiqued. In The Golden Girls, Blanche and Rose are wearing mud masks. I think that's the episode where Dorothy's(?) son is marrying a black woman, and when they first meet her family, they have on  mud masks. Immediately, they realize how bad it looks.

I'm not saying that it was wise for these shows to do this in the first place, but this to me is quite different from the two late-night Jimmies (Fallon & Kimmel) wearing actual blackface to perform a non-critical caricature of a black person. But even Roxane Gay (prominent black author and cultural critic) thinks it's stupid to remove the episode from The Golden Girls.
