Chromatica Is ARTPOP Without The Balls

This is by no means a bad thing. Not every album has to be outrageous, 'different', or eccentric. This is what sets Chromatica apart from her other albums. It is just 'there' and comfortable with itself. ARTPOP has the edge but it can sometimes come off as desperate and insecure. Chromatica doesn't really have an edge but at the same time it's comfortable with being generic and not having to prove itself. They are similar in which they are pop albums and have EDM influences/sounds.

I just really wish Chromatica was as ambitious as ARTPOP or other Gaga albums. That's my rant for today. They are similar but very different at the same time. I'm just still mourning the loss of AP and what could have been. I just hoped Chrome would revive that ambitiousness...but it doesn't seem like it wants to.

You could also say that ARTPOP is Chromatica but without commitment. She tries to write personal lyrics but it's so watered down that the lyrics just all become about having sex. Chromatica is her most personal album to date and is extremely successful in conveying its message. ARTPOP can't relate to that unfortunitely.

If you want ARTPOP just listen to ARTPOP.

Bonkers

I think when it came to ARTPOP, Lady Gaga was focused on as much as possible being "her work".  With Chromatica, I think she felt more comfortable handing over more of the work to very talented writers & producers.  There are exceptions on both albums, but overall, I think she's feeling less like she needs to prove herself, and more in love with co-creating.

I see ARTPOP as being shallow and superficial on purpose. It's about "Gaga" the celebrity, not exactly about the girl behind the Aura. I guess you could say it's her "Reputation". With Chromatica she settles in comfortably with Stefani and Gaga.

Chromatica Island

Both are great albums, no need for competition with her albums, all her albums great in their own ways!

I disagree. She managed to create her first truly sonically consistent album, with no filler, and lyrics that pack emotional punch without any pomp and circumstance. Considering her last album, this was very ambitious. When was the last time we got consistent back-to-back bangers from her? 2009?

ARTPOP had balls, but it was also muddied by concepts that were grandiose in one moment then tossed out in the next. She had 8 million things to say but stuck the landing on about 5 of them. So many themes in that album were about finding identity in music, dealing with emotional trauma, the perils of fame... but she tackles those themes with so much more grace and gusto on Chromatica, and everything actually feels cohesive.

Chromatica feels like she's matured as an artist and has improved her storytelling ability. We'll always love ARTPOP for what it was but I didn't want Chromatica to be anything like it, and thankfully it isn't. It's more refined, more fun, and delivers on its theme.

I like ARTPOP. It's a fun album. But it's also not at all what I expected with how much she hyped it up. It's just EDM - to me, not experimental at all like its raved to be by a lot of ARTPOP stans. Her main producers on the album were DJWS, Zedd and Madeon, and the sound on it shows - just like the sound on Chromatica is very much Bloodpop, Axwell and Burns.

pop ate my heart

I'm just shocked that after all these years, some of yall STILL don't understand what she did w ARTPOP.

With ARTPOP she was doing ARTPOP. She explained it a hundred times in interviews. It's literally a reverse of Warhol, whether yall take it seriously or not. In the lyrics, she used a lot of themes that are very common in generic, superficial pop (sex, partying, love) as clever analogies and metaphors of deep, artistic concepts. And that's what makes it ARTPOP, and it's a VERY creative, artistically deep and fascinating concept. For e.g., G.U.Y. is not about her being a power btm. It's about her relationship w the music industry (watch the mv), and sexxx dreams deals w a similar theme. the same w MANiCURE, Donatella, Fashion, etc. Conveying deep artistic concepts through pop lyrics and analogies is HER THING since The Fame (another album that might seem superficial and meaningless but it's very conceptual and clever). She injected ART in POP. Art being the essence and pop being the format

I'm not making this up, she said all this herself. Even though I know in most interviews she didn't explain it well and even described some of the songs  herself as "just fun pop jams", you can tell through the visuals and other good interviews that it's actually a lot more than that, and her most deep, fully-realized and personal record second to Chromatica

Once you get this, everything  Gaga did since TF until now will make more sense, and yall would stop saying she's "pretentious".

PS: the fact that more than half of what she wanted to do w the album got cancelled might've been detrimental to our interpretations and views of the album

ARTPOP was EDM but not the generic edm that radio play. I mean compare Aura, Applause, G.U.Y. or Jewels N'Drugs to a popular EDM song. They stand apart and alone. They hit hard! They instantly grab you and are rather harsh! Break Free vs G.U.Y. You can tell the latter hits harder and is not as commercial and carefully made for radio as the other one.

ARTGOD

Chromatica is Gaga trying to please everyone too much, to the detriment of the final product.

With Chromatica I feel like Gaga worried too much about making something simple, accesible, familiar and streaming friendly, and by doing so she ended up making a lot of material that feels too watered down or too afraid to go anywhere truly exciting.

The strongest parts of the album are where she lets go and has fun, but they’re few and far between.
