How big was Britney really without MTV or Cable?

Yes, she did "big" commercials, but so did other "celebrities".  If you didn't watch Access Hollywood, Extra or Entertainment Tonight, read tabloid magazines or listen to pop radio, how big was Britney really in a pre-2010s internet world?

And this goes for her peers too: (Justin, Christina, Beyonce, P!nk etc...) I'm not saying that you wouldn't have heard of her or her peers, but in a pre-Youtube era where a performance would only air once on network tv, how big were they really if you didn't have MTV or cable and didn't listen to those genres?

I have to imagine you never could have been overexposed to them.

well, she has plenty of classics from 1999 til like 2004 or so so I think did / was quite big back then

You could still be overexposed on magazine covers and magazine articles, radio etc. If your music video was played a ton on MTV/Viva

But she was huge obviously I mean hello her debut album sold 25 million copies worldwide.

I also remember during the breakdown era of 2007 she was on the news every single day

Britney was everywhere....magazines, tv specials, daytime and nighttime tv shows, special concert events, sold out world tours, everybody knew her hits even if you didn’t pay attention to pop music - they were inescapable.  Britney was and is a household name from 1999 .

it was literally britney mania! she was absolutely everywhere!

if you guys think these current pop girls are 'big' they are nothing compared to how big Britney was in her peak.

Britney was also one of the first and biggest celebrities who were followed and photographed for online tabloids consistently.  Perez, TMZ, blogs and gossip sites were plastered with her image.

Exactly.  You can have a hit song now and only your fans know it - or a lot of people know it but you have no face, image and possibly aren’t even known by name.

Everyone knew about Britney and her peers in the pre-internet/early internet days. Aside from awards shows, her face was all over magazines (even if you didn't read them, you'd see the covers in grocery store check-out lines), she was on talk shows, the radio, etc., and MTV and VH1 actually played videos back then. This was a golden age for TRL. There was tons of Britney paraphernalia. Same for Christina, *NSYNC, BSB, 98 Degrees, etc.

If anything, I think the internet has made celebrity fan cultures more segmented and less streamlined. Also, awards shows were bigger must-see events, and you had to tune in or lose out.

there was a ****ton of merchandise too. Everyone you knew talked about her. My elementary school talent show was like 8 groups of girls all doing a dance to a britney song. it was madness lol.

I'm from the UK and Britney was everywhere during my childhood. Always on TV (news, adverts, music videos, cameos in shows like Sabrina and Kenan & Kel), she was in all the teen magazines, her hits were played a lot on radio.

She was the 'it girl' for a long time, her peak can only really be compared to Gaga 2009-2011.

Gaga has had a big impact on pop but Britney's peak was way bigger than Gaga's, it was literally Britney mania - she was the IT girl, the Superstar.

I agree, that's what I meant. The only pop girl who has come anywhere near in terms of impact is Gaga :)

Britney Spears is the most iconic name in pop music and I don't think anyone will be able to top that, not even Madonna..

Britney is the image you get in your head when you imagine what a popstar is :diane:
