Idk but Ayo is kinda cringe. John Wayne woulda been better tbh, or the melancholy masturbation song:vegas:

John Wayne is a fan favorite, but the GP did wouldnt like it. I dont know if you remember but everyone praised A-YO when she performed it.

that’s what it says in the quote, joanne was sent to radio in italy in december, and then the piano version was released and sent to radio in january. hence ‘a piano version followed in the rest of the world‘

Well apparently NRJ (France) didn't have Joanne on their list, that's why I find it strange. They were the first ones to recieve DITD (& Monster) during the battle for the 4th TFM European single

MR as the lead single of her new pop album after C2C and the tribute era, the fans would have destroyed her:air: it would have probably done better though

And I agree with you on John Wayne, she performed it at the VSFS, probably to see how well it could do, and since the views were high, they probably released the music video hoping that it would do well... but the video never outviewed the performance :emma:

Well, I think that after Perfect Illusion underperforming and A-Yo not really picking up steam, the label low-key lost hope over the more upbeat material of the album, hence my previous comment about them only releasing ballads after PI.

It's also pretty obvious that John Wayne was part of Gaga's vision for the era, and she still wanted to share this with the fans regardless of what the label wanted. So she got to execute her vision while letting the label release the singles they wanted.

"A-YO" is one of my favorite tracks from Joanne. She performed it on James Corden's show as well, and it's used in Jazzercise routines.

Do we know if she paid for the video? And for Joanne?

I don't think they ever really expected the upbeat songs to do that well, they probably wanted to experiment with a few different songs in case one them them would take off, but I guess they were aware that Gaga had to release stripped down music after ARTPOP/before ASIB. They probably made every choice at the very last minute in the Joanne era. For exemple, I find it very strange that they released the MR video so late... for THIS. There must have been a lot of things happening backstage

Today I learnt that Joanne was a single.

I just thought it was a gift to the fans. :green:

Why not allow MR to get all its success, and then release A-YO as third single? why scrap it as a third single?

Because Million Reasons was scheduled for the Superbowl. Nothing else would have done better as the third single. My point was that she wanted A-YO to be the single before it (as the second single)

LOL Million Reasons was a struggle hit. I did well after the Superbowl . She literally performed the song at every event in 2016 and early 2017 hoping to get a smash hit from the ballad.

AYO could have been a great lead, it's radio friendly, catchy, and infectious. It is really representative of the whole album and the country sound and her whole cowgirl aesthetic.

She should have put more effort into Perfect Illusion and gave us some live performances in addition to the radio tours she was going on.

John Wayne should have been the single around Superbowl time or Diamond heart with an american themed video!

I remember how the general public fell in love with A-YO performance on SNL.

Only in the US, A-Yo didn't do well on iTunes worldwide while MR was doing better as a promo single

A-YO is so incredibly underrated. I do wonder how it would have performed as the lead single instead of Joanne.

Think it's a wound I still entertain...

She wanted John Wayne. The label didn’t. She got her way with a music video. I don’t think A-Yo was ever an option beyond initial brainstorming. If anything, it would’ve been JW.
