I think that after Million Reasons, it became obvious to Gaga and her team that Joanne would mainly connect to the public through its ballads.

Joanne wasnt really a single, it was released as an extra itunes single to close the album. They knew it wouldnt do well.

It was supposed to be the single before Million Reasons, with the latter becoming a single after the Superbowl, but the Carpool Karaoke gave it such a huge push that Interscope scrapped A-YO (Like Venus vs DWUW).

I think it would have done well, it was clearly her favorite song as well.

Why not allow MR to get all its success, and then release A-YO as third single? why scrap it as a third single?

It's not from the album, was released a year and a half later and it wasn't sent to radios... it's called a "single" on iTunes because it's a standalone track. Joanne was a single in Italy though

it was on the album, it’s just a different version. like a remix, basically

also,

”It was released as the album's third official single on December 22, 2017 in Italy, and a piano version, titled "Joanne (Where Do You Think You're Goin'?)", followed in the rest of the world on January 26, 2018.”

Alright, my point is there was an official third single after Million Reasons and it did get a video, tho most people don't remember it.

Well, yeah, it's kinda like an official remix indeed! But isn't a single supposed to be a song that is sent to radios? Isn't that the definition of a single?

I know but im saying they did not go with Joanne (the song) as a single because they though the general public wanted a ballad. Joanne was released a long time after the album as an extra thing to end the era, and because it meant alot to Gaga. They did not release it assuming it would be a hit.

They probably went for PI because they didn't want the fans to be too shocked by the difference between ARTPOP and Joanne... but they could have released MR, we've heard ballads since The Fame

Imagine if she released a ballad as a lead from a solo studio album..... :ladyhaha:

I'm pretty sure she always envisioned John Wayne as a single at some point. It would have been a cool lead.

No of course, and a hit it definitely wasn't... It is worth mentioning that the album version of the song was released in Italy only. The piano version followed worldwide a month later.

that’s what it says in the quote, joanne was sent to radio in italy in december, and then the piano version was released and sent to radio in january. hence ‘a piano version followed in the rest of the world‘

MR as the lead single of her new pop album after C2C and the tribute era, the fans would have destroyed her:air: it would have probably done better though

And I agree with you on John Wayne, she performed it at the VSFS, probably to see how well it could do, and since the views were high, they probably released the music video hoping that it would do well... but the video never outviewed the performance :emma:
