Joanne wasnt really a single, it was released as an extra itunes single to close the album. They knew it wouldnt do well.

I think it would have done well, it was clearly her favorite song as well. Why not allow MR to get all its success, and then release A-YO as third single? why scrap it as a third single? Joanne was a single in Italy though it was on the album, it’s just a different version. like a remix, basically also, ”It was released as the album's third official single on December 22, 2017 in Italy, and a piano version, titled "Joanne (Where Do You Think You're Goin'?)", followed in the rest of the world on January 26, 2018.”

But isn't a single supposed to be a song that is sent to radios? Isn't that the definition of a single?

Joanne was released a long time after the album as an extra thing to end the era, and because it meant alot to Gaga. They did not release it assuming it would be a hit. I'm pretty sure she always envisioned John Wayne as a single at some point. It would have been a cool lead.

No of course, and a hit it definitely wasn't... It is worth mentioning that the album version of the song was released in Italy only. The piano version followed worldwide a month later. MR as the lead single of her new pop album after C2C and the tribute era, the fans would have destroyed her it would have probably done better though And I agree with you on John Wayne, she performed it at the VSFS, probably to see how well it could do, and since the views were high, they probably released the music video hoping that it would do well... but the video never outviewed the performance
