Sorry but like...this seems like a very unneccesarily heated response to a minor detail of a report. And this minor detail still does not render this report completely inaccurate and useless like you seem to imply.

Matter of factly... I don't even think they are wrong with claiming that some scientists thought that volcanic activity in this area was a thing of the past. They put no time stamp or exact dates to those claims. If you can date back to scientists in 1983 being suspicious about volcanic activity there that's great, but like... that doesn't reflect what scientists thought before 1983. This scientist from 1821 called Johann Steiniger claimed that vulcanic activity in the Eifel region was fully extinct. And if the earliest scientific article that questions this claim is from 1983 (which really wasn't that long ago), that means science thought this claim was a truth for more than 150 years.

The sentence pretty much accurately reflects how the discourse changed over time: Many people thought this wasn't a thing for many years, but as of recent people changed their mind. I don't really get your hang up about this. Like... this is geophysics were talking about as well, if 10,000 years ago is recent for them, 1983 is "recent" as well.
