Makes me wonder how the two-term rule came to be? Was it a post-WW2 decision? Sounds like. Something from the McCarthy era. I’m not precisely for or against it, it’s just weird because my country doesn’t have any term limit for Prime Ministers and I don’t think any other country does either. I don’t think any country has it except the US.

No, not from the McCarthy era, it was very much a response to FDR. From the time of George Washington until his presidency, every president served a maximum of two (full) terms.

ya know, this country voted for George W. Bush TWICE, which was the administration that did the most damage to this country in modern times... A lot of those same, stupid fvcking Americans are going to do the same for Trump. People are so lost these days, they crave this 'false' sense of security by having someone or something to believe in, like this full-time bullshitter Trump, who is such a con-artist. They choose to believe his trash ass lies, even when the facts are out in the open.

It was passed in 1947. Yes my country, and most of the EU also does not have term limits. Which makes sense tbh, if someone is doing a good enough job for people to continue voting for them, I don't see how thats a "dictatorship"

Trump can try to run for a 3rd term, but its up to the public if he will serve a 3rd term.

Funny how American touts itself as the "most democratic democracy" bc of term limits, yet still relies on an electoral college...smh

I also find that a peculiar contradiction in American politics. So if the rule only dates from 1947, then I suppose it would strengthen Trump’s legal case (as a relict of the Cold War) then if it had been set in stone from the very beginning. (I would have assumed it dated back to the American Revolution where they didn’t want Presidents that ended up like monarch-for-life, which would defeat the purpose of a republic and of fighting one monarchy (the UK) for a new one). And also I agree that the electoral college system is antiquated. The problem I guess is when you want to remove unnecessary aspects of a system but can’t do so without ripping the entire thing apart. I don’t think Trump or any President (no matter how popular) can do it without major resistance. Even though, from a technical viewpoint, it would be a neutral decision as both parties would likely benefit and neither would be favoured over the other (Clinton would have been re-elected in 2000, Obama in 2016 etc).

You're thinking of Cleveland I'm sure, but he didn't serve three terms (just two non-consecutive). Your understanding of the process by which a two-term limit could be repealed is also badly flawed: the process would have to look like*:

1. Congress passes a Constitutional Amendment to repeal the 22nd Amendment by a 2/3 vote in each chamber

2. 3/4 of state legislatures ratify the amendment

*it's also a possibility that a convention of the states could be called, but that is at least in my estimation a virtual impossibility and to my knowledge has never occurred before

I have incomplete understanding of unprecedented events, just like everyone else. In any regard, I don’t think repealing the two-term rule will happen.

No, the date that an amendment was ratified has no bearing on the strength of a legal case. There is in fact no legal case here, the only way he could run for and be elected to a third term is via legislative removal of the 22nd Amendment, something completely independent of the courts

I think George Bush Snr is the worst president of modern times. He started the involvement of the US in endless wars in the Middle East. All the problems of today can be traced back to him and his pathetic single term 1989-1993.

Yes, but arguably by vilifying these voters for their views, we deepen the divide in America--which will inch us closer and closer to a "cold" civil war. Instead we should free the press from the military-industrial complex so that we can have more informed voters in the future, instead of "sheep" or conspiracy theorists.

The issue of the media and politics is uniquely American, because of the ties the media has to the military.

Fortunately the presidential term limit is part of the Constitution (via amendment), meaning it’s not going anywhere, and Trump would literally have to stage a military coup to overcome it.

that being said, it’s all a moot point anyway because we are voting his orange ass OUT in November on periodt :bye:

Can anyone actually defend this? This is a dictator in the making

Not to complete defend him, but the president term limit is 10 years.  That's why presidents stop at two terms.  Maybe he's suggesting a third re-election and stop at year 2?  Again, not to defend him but that's the only explanation his supporters could defend this

Excellent point, and with regard to that you do not even have to 'vilify' voters because people just straight up do not want to be informed. You cannot teach someone anything unless they're open and receptive to learning. So this idea that we have all this potential to make 'informed voters' is really not feasible, which brings me back to my main point: People are going to believe what they want to believe - and in this case, it is the media, infowars, Trump's twitter account, etc.

True but mainly his son is the Bush I was referring to.
