What should have been Joanne's lead single?

A-Yo probably would've made more sense. I think they wanted to put that out as a single at some point, but realised Perfect Illusion underperformed as a lead single and had to put out a safe option for the GP, Million Reasons. Also, didn't they put out a poll for 2nd single pitting A-Yo against MR at some point?

Perfect Illusion has definitely grown on me, but not a good choice for lead single tbh. It made no sense given the theme/concept of the album and her explanation for what the song meant kept changing from interview to interview. Also, it didn't fit the folk/country vibe of the album. Wish it was more similar to the demo and had bit more of a psychedelic vibe mixed with a folk/country twang to it that Sinner's Prayer had.

Diamond Heart 100%

I’m convinced that every lead track on each album was meant to be the lead single by Gaga, but Interscope changed it.

Just Dance

Bad Romance

Marry The Night

Aura

Diamond Heart

Alice

I think Angel Down would’ve been kind of cool.  Risky for sure but was anything on Joanne a guaranteed hit?  Also wasn’t it rumored to be the single prior to Perfect Illusion being announced?

I LOVE Perfect Illusion, but let’s not act like it’s one of her best singles. It only charted as high as it did because of the fans. Can anyone explain why she never performed it in the US (aside from tour dates)? She definitely had many radio interviews but never promoted it beyond that? The only performance I remember was the Japan one, where she performed it acoustic on the piano. She did SNL the week the album was released but performed A-YO and Million Reasons. And obviously we know she sung MR many many many times after that.....

Truly, Dancin’ in Circles should’ve been the lead. Seriously. Some of the lyrics are racy, but the song could’ve been toned down and/or edited for radio.

She performed it on the dive bar thing and struggled a bit to sing it live, it's a powerful and beautiful song but it literally tears apart your vocal chords, plus I think she dropped it after seeing how much hate the song got when it came out (the polarizing comments can be seen also in FF2).

Yes, I was including the Dive Bar Tour as a tour date.

It’s sad that she never went on Ellen, Fallon, Kimmel, Good Morning America, etc...... people even speculated that she would be performing it at the VMAs that year but nope. :(

I think the only logical option was A-Yo. That’s even what Gaga wanted. It would have been the bridge from pop to country/classic rock. It was basically a Taylor Swift song sonically. Lyrically :ohwell:

Perfect Illusion had she committed more to having it be more well received.

Otherwise probably Diamond Heart.

Honestly anything would’ve been better. PI is so out place and not a good way to set up the album. Strongest contenders would be dh, ayo, joanne, jw, or mr

Start out with John Wayne as the lead since it has the most classic Gaga energy to it but still sounds different and is super catchy and just a lot of trashy fun. She’ll hook the GP!!

Followed by Perfect Illusion, still upbeat but more of a reflective bop? (I really believe that PI would have smashed harder if they kept more of the Tame Impala influence and production.. very hazy and a little bit melancholy)

Next is Sinner’s Prayer. It’s catchy and the lyrics/delivery are really cinematic and I think it’d be a great opportunity for a storyline video. It’s definitely the most country song on the album but it has good appeal to different listeners, maybe a big adult contemporary hit kind of like Million Reasons.

Finally, Joanne, exactly as she released it with the stripped version and video. Beautiful way to end the era!

Diamond Heart for sure. It has the Joanne vibe but still a very pop melody/vocal style.

It would have been a good intro to the sound that Joanne had.
