If Joanne was released now it would be critically acclaimed

Given the current political climate and the GP listening to more acoustic music these days, was Gaga ahead of her time yet again with Joanne?

I don't know about this. Joanne would have to be polished up a lot more before it could be 'critically acclaimed' in todays market. Maybe a cross between Joanne and ASIB.

But I'd rather have Chromatica

Born in Chromatica

Absolutely, the album would have gotten acclaim. The album had a beautiful story behind it and I think many did not appreciate it until years later. Plus, quite a few artists did follow the stripped down country-pop trend Lady Gaga set.

But yeah, she was.

I say no. She would be going from Shallow, ITA, INLA to.... Million Reasons? There is no comparison.

Do you mean released simultaneously with Chromatica or instead? :ally:

Let's say Chromatica was LG5 and Joanne was LG6:trollga:

Joanne would have been critically acclaimed no matter what time it released.

Angel Down and Come To Mama would have DEFINITELY been a single and promoted like MR.

Hypothetically, if she had a lot of the good grace with the public that she has right now, but without ASIB or Chromatica to interfere with opinions? I would say yeah, maybe even more so than what it got.

Joanne never really got any supremely harsh lashings from critics or from the general public, from what I remember. It was viewed pretty fairly, if not a little more harshly than others (which is the general case with Gaga). I think it would have a little more cushioning, like what Chromatica is kind of getting.

I think the only reason why Joanne was hated on by fans was because it came after a "drought" of POPGA. Had she released Joanne after a Chromatica type pop album most fans would love it and view it as something fresh, a cute album and a bonus album in a way and appreciate the era more. Many were genuinly scared she was abandoning "pure pop" (whatever that means lol) but yeah. I don't think it has to do with social issues. It has more to do with fans being SUPER hungry for visualGa and PurePopGa more than anything I think.

It probably still wouldn't have done as well as her other albums because Joanne suffers from a lack of single material :queenga: if you think Million Reasons was a stretch of a song to blow up out of no where - imagine trying to recreate that success with the other songs on that album

It would have seemed kind of weird/forced after the success of ASIB. It would have seemed like she did it to capitalize on the Americana/country/folk/rock sound that did so well with ASIB. I do wonder how chromatica would have done if it was released in 2016 though. I feel like the GP has been wanting classic dance Gaga back for a while now.
