I love ARTPOP. But the vocals always sounded kinda flat to me, i didn't know why or how. Kinda monotone. On Chromatica, the vocals are full of life, deep, with reverb, it just sounds amazing. It's like ARTPOP vocals are 2D, and Chromatica's ones are 3D, don't know how to explain. With the Chromatica vocal style, ARTPOP would have been amazing.

That is true in every case except for the example I used imo (swinefest vs ARTPOP studio versions)

Take a look at the Swinefest then listen to the studio versions
ARTPOP live, she has a lot of warmth and passion in her voice, giving a lot of charm to the song, but on the studio version her voice is so autotuned that she sounds straight up robotic having no emotions, or like she didn't even want to sing
MANiCURE live, her vocals are raw/shouty/loud, on the studio version her voice is a bit raspy but because of the autotune it sounds weird. Who even put so much autotune on a pop rock song?
Aura live, her vocals during the verses were very shouty and raspy, but on the studio version the verses are very close to being spoken, not sung, and once again her vocals are so autotuned that she sounds robotic
And again the same about Sex Dreams' verses

I agree about the differences and I prefer ARTPOP live so much, I was disappointed when I first heard the studio lifeless vocals. But I would bet a lot that she did not sing the same way as Swinefest in the studio before the autotune (for the ARTPOP song). Aura live is a lot more like the demo vocals which I'm sure she prefered to the final version but again they are different vocal takes where she toned down the style a lot.

I have always loved it when Gaga uses vocal effects. It's part of her signature sound and I am glad she revisited it on Chromatica. 911 reminds me a bit of Heavy Metal Lover for that reason. What is nice about Chromatica though is they mix her very pure hardly edited vocals with her more robotic ones. :golfclap:

I voted for Chromatica but I love the vocal effects on both albums.

Chromatica and its not even close. I want an updated version of ARTPOP. I love that song but it can be better using the technique used on Chromatica.

It's used more effectively on Chromatica. Aura is an eargasm, but the soundscapes on Chromatica are a whole journey.

For all the lashes people have given Bloodpop (well, mostly deaf haters on popheads and popjustice), he & the engineer (Benjamin Rice) were great at making sure her vocals sounded amazing on Chromatica, whereas on ARTPOP is was like her voice was competing with the production

This is true too. Her live voice sounded so much more dynamic and interesting. For example, she sounded so hot on the Swinefest version of Sexxx Dreams, but the album track vocals lack that type of punch.

I'm not really a fan of the autotune/vocal effects on either (it's better than The Fame though), but Gaga totally needs to do a live version of many of the album tracks like on ARTPOP, even if it happens much later than the release!

It was interesting reading the article about Bloodpop and how Gaga put all of herself into 911 and it was difficult to get through.  I would have liked to have heard the raw, passionate version, although I have a feeling, even that song performed live will have effects on it.

Technically speaking, doesn't Chromatica rather use vocoder effects? Thats very different from autotuning and has a different intention as well.

We should really be differencing AutoTune, Vocoders, Melodyne or other effects. Chromatica has more Melodyne and effects than AutoTune.

Sorry but 911 is her most autotuned output since something on Born This Way.
Then again. I don't think what we're hearing is autotune on Gaga's voice. Doesn't sound like "The Cher Effect", probably just some vocal effect

Thank you all, I wasn't sure what the vocal effects were called.

I think that the vocoder and melodyne sounds richer and is not what Gaga considers "vocal correction" because it's really not.

I just thought examination or comparing the two albums' use of these effects would be interesting. Albums 7 years apart and how different the sonic landscape is now.

Edit: I feel like there was question as to if Gaga did a dance pop album again, how would she use non-electronic vocals. But now we know the answer :billie:

This is such a great explanation! Judging from interviews and what she's said, I think Gaga was very displeased with the details of the tracks on ARTPOP (vocal effects, tracklist, etc) I think her label wouldn't let up on a few things. Hence why she said she wouldn't let a producer use autotune on her voice anymore.

Can you imagine a 2020/Chromatica version of Aura or Sexxx Dreams?!
