Replay can also be about the music industry

I mean, if you look at it from the "predatory and sexual nature of the music industry" lens then yeah, probably, given that her molester is a music producer, but the song doesn't seem to explicitly or subtly reference that. That would be a little bit of a reach. It's very clearly about her sexual assault and the resulting PTSD. It's an abstraction of her struggles and what she feels from it.

"I was protected by the monks of Azarath, I was raised by my friends. They are my family, this is my home and you are not welcome here."

I'm sure this about Christian Carino. I think it was her most recent heartbreak when writing this album, and it makes sense lyrically.

What about labels over working their artists? What about the depression she went into after ARTPOP and Joanne? What about her in a depression with her hip and body pain, while Troy was forcing her to do so much. The fact there is so much pressure on artist to not only release music, but upto standards of the label.

I actually feel like it is about the fame.

The fame is the monster.

”Replay” is referring to how every time she reaches success, her man leaves

I got drunk

This is what she wrote on the Spotify storyline for the song

"But really Chromatica cannot exist without an abstract explanation of what it's like to be triggered if you have PTSD. It's a replay of all my monsters, not the little ones. And the very thing that has plagued mind for years, trauma, is precisely the thing that now powers my life force to be braver i.e. this voice I hear - continue to make music although your brain feels like it's breaking sometimes."

- Gaga

I totally agree that those subjects that you mentioned are touched upon on this album, just not on this song. She addresses them more straightforwardly on Plastic Doll (commoditization of pop stars) and Fun Tonight (battles with fame and depression)

"I was protected by the monks of Azarath, I was raised by my friends. They are my family, this is my home and you are not welcome here."

I think of it as Gaga being triggered unexpectedly in everyday life and ruminating in that feeling, while the person who accidentally triggered her doesn't know how to react to witnessing that. I may just be projecting, but when you read the lyrics, it feels right.

Fun Tonight to me screams of her internal Gaga vs Stefani battle. Gaga loves the fame, Stefani struggles. Stefani screams for help, Gaga shuts her down and parties to distraction. Stefani looks in the mirror and doesn’t think she’s enough, Gaga’s confidence convinces her she is.

I stare at the girl in the mirror, she talks to me too

Yeah, I can see it in your face
You don't think I've pulled my weight
Maybe it's time for us to say goodbye

I feel like these lyrics are totally about the times Stefani may have wrestled with it being too difficult to be Gaga.

Anyhoo, back on topic (sorry!), I absolutely believe Replay is about her rape and the trauma and PTSD that it led to.

I remember in her interview with Oprah she said that everything that has happened to her was meant to happen, including the rape, and I think the you’re the worst thing and the best thing that’s happened to me line references that

I'm glad I'm not the only one who interprets those lyrics from both the songs that way. :kara:

"I was protected by the monks of Azarath, I was raised by my friends. They are my family, this is my home and you are not welcome here."
