Why is Rain On Me 11 on the Digital Songs chart? It spent the whole week between 1 and 3 on Itunes.

I'm sure you guys already discussed this, but i'm not reading 400 pages.

This is a good time to point out that miss ROM had no red updates for 28 hours

Not conclusive evidence. Also, the graph starts at 340k. If you were to plot it starting at 0, the decrease becomes a lot less significant.

That's true, but it's still pretty decent. On this limited chart, the present compared to the previous lowest dip which came around the new year is over 10%. I would imagine New Years to historically be a pretty low-listen time. A time right after the holidays when people typically are not working as much. As we see from weekends and covid, that tends to lead to reduced listening.

I agree that the lockdown and protests do have an effect but we can't ascertain the degree of their impact. I just find it problematic to look at the very limited graph and claim something when there is absolutely no baseline for comparison. Just the scientist in me being careful about interpreting data.

Yup. A good baseline seasonal pattern could be established by studying variations within a year (i.e. deviations from year average). To account for massive releases, we take the average deviations across, let's say, 5-8 years.

This would be similar to how countries are studying excess deaths due to COVID-19.

Edit: One flaw here would be that the number of subscribers is not taken into account.

Yeah, that's a good point. I think looking through various reports, it is possible to make a loose outline of subs from the start of 2017 (how far back Spotify keeps its records online) and now and probably make some pretty accurate assumptions.

Ideally, I want to suck in ALL the data they have, normalize it, associate with other data we pull (radio, itunes, apple, amazon, Shazam, etc) and build a very comprehensive analysis of data over time and use that to build accurate predictors and build more tables that supply useful insight into current releases (which @derpmonster is starting to do already).

We probably won't have nearly as much historical data outside of Spotify/iTunes, so a more comprehensive view will take a while to build

No, you're right ha. But I think there's still room for optimism and probability there are negative trends weighing upon us.
