But how can one be sure that the decrease is attributed to the lockdown and protests? Could be an annual cycle?

We have the summer, when music consumption is usually at a yearly high. As far as I know only December beats any other month in revenue.

And this cycle just happened to magically coincide with 2 massive events with big repercussions? :sure:

I think it's unlikely this is entirely seasonal, but massive releases surely make a difference. That would be good data to look up. And exactly what we want to put in the chARTPOP app. But that'll likely be a few months away, but do note any data that makes sense and I'll make sure I tag it for inclusion.  And again, this is all assuming this chart I posted is actually accurate, ha.

Not conclusive evidence. Also, the graph starts at 340k. If you were to plot it starting at 0, the decrease becomes a lot less significant.

Yup. A good baseline seasonal pattern could be established by studying variations within a year (i.e. deviations from year average). To account for massive releases, we take the average deviations across, let's say, 5-8 years.

This would be similar to how countries are studying excess deaths due to COVID-19.

Edit: One flaw here would be that the number of subscribers is not taken into account.
