 I don't think it was meant to be a specific social/political commentary (Richy & someone else gave completely different answers on what the tribes represented)...more of a sci fi/power rangers type of Mad Max thing (e.g. cyber tribe, environmental tribe, etc.) with some general social/political aspects. However, I absolutely see how it could be read as "all we need is kindness for Republicans to see the light and get along with Democrats" and that would...not go over well. So I'm not shocked if she dropped it. Some of the reviews have mentioned a "steam punk sci fi world full of equality" and that's probably a better description than "tribes that come together".
