What Should The Response to the Protests Be?

Will the protests and riots die down, or will they last until X happens? What should X be? Will the protests last until the other officers are arrested? People are saying that the protests are continuing because the government hasn't done anything yet, and so what should the government do? :wtfga:

It's about so much more than just that one Officer. Even if he his charged with first degree murder the problems are still there and evidently seen by the actions of police to the protesters. The Police system as a whole needs to be reformed.

If the US gov acknowledges that what happened was murder committed by the police officer and not just an “incident”, that would be a huge step forward to begin with.

Then vote Trump out, because he is a racist, white supremacist, male Chauvinist p1g

Get someone to reform the country and police system

I didn't ask for a free ride, I only asked you to show me a real good time.

Reform the police department, different training approach, strict vetting of cops, community policing, madatory cameras on, ending for profit policing, demilitarize the police, end the war on drugs, decriminalize some none violent crimes, send social workers instead of cops in some cases, allow protection for whistleblowers, police brutality consequences by hiring independent investigators..

This protest is about police brutality in general specially towards the black community, not just George Floyd. So even if they arrest all the cops, protest wont stop unless they create systemic change by law. Even a black president for 8 years refused to create real change which is why the BLM movement started under Obama.

They should hold a public memorial for George Floyd, but be careful to ensure that no violence occurs. The public want closure, not just hollow rhetoric (something that Obama only gave - promises). They also need an independent Federal Commission into black deaths in custody.

Here in Australia indigenous men are incarcerated at a rate FOUR times higher than African Americans. We have had 430 black deaths in custody in the last 30 years. We stand in solidarity with African Americans and so now Washington DC must not only investigate causes and enablers also but find how ways to ensure that the police force must be held to greater account and transparency.

There is just too much blamelessness. Officers that break the law should be isolated and rehabilited before they spread their hate to new officers. Hate is contagious. They tarnish the reputation of the entire government.

REALITY

The response should be what the government should've done decades upon decades upon decades upon decades ago.

We need to reform the police force and we need fundamental changes in our government. As long as our government is still being run the way it is, without the regard for the lives of Black Americans and POC, then nothing will change.

These protests are a result of the decades (and really, centuries) of the oppression of Black Americans. These protests will continue for a while, I feel.

Yes and with the stress of unemployment, the COVID19 situation, the current presidency, and now this, all minorities are now sticking up and fighting for a systemic change, this is now more than just about one person, this is a social rebirth, revolution

There should be some tangible demands. The HK protests had 5 actual tangible demands that every held onto. It could unite everyone with a common goal. Goals could be for the conviction of all 4 officers and some kind of reform.

Action. If I were the president of the US, I'd make a statement and a briefing that would air on national TV on every channel. This is what I would say.

"Dear citizens of the United States of America.

As your president, I have sworn under oath to serve this country and protect this nation. This is a recognised issue that has been going on for far too long. Its true, racism is embedded into this nation. But we need to change that. Its time we actually listened to the people and made a change for good. I want to make it clear - I hear every single one of you. And that is why I'll be having a look into reforming police and the justice system. The police officers are meant to enforce the law, not play god. Police brutality has gone on far far too long. There needs to be a system in place where we do not allow racism in our police and justice system. I'll also look at repealing the 2nd amendment. We do not need to carry guns. Guns bring more violence which we do not need. By banning the use of guns, less people will lose their lives because of sick individuals.

I will also set up a benefit fund for the black community. This will help pay for college and university tuition fees, and giving back to our black citizens. It will not fix the damage done by white people, and I accept that. It is not going to bring your loved ones back. But please take this as a token of help.

I can also say that as of today, the KKK and other white supremacist organisations and now classified as terrorist organisations and we will be dealing with them accordingly.

America, this is not going to fix the wounds overnight. I know that. I am deeply sorry for the failures of this country allowing racism to happen in our streets. This is a start, and I hope you'll see within time, we can put an end to racism and live in America where we can live together in peace and lift eachother up and not put others down or kill eachother because of a difference in skin colour. Enough is enough, and today marks the start of a new beginning. Lets end racism.

Thank you,

Your president"

But I'm not the president so...  America needs action and the president needs to listen to the people and make the changes as soon as possible. The US needs to reform the police force and need to reform its justice system. It needs huge fundamental changes to stop the oppression of minority groups. And it needs to repeal the 2nd amendment. It needs to ensure that minority groups really do have the same rights as white hetro people.

We all know Trump is racist. So until he stops, the changes needed will not happen unfortunately.

End Racism Now

The US constitution is outdated and puts urban, young, and minority voices at a disadvantage, while allowing for a 'right to bear arms'. I think the US should get a constitution establishing it as a parliamentary (proportional representation) democracy, anti-discrimination clauses, minorities granted special protection, social rights included, an impartial judiciary, and a president (or prime minister) that can be voted out by the parliament at any time (e.g. motion of no confidence). These kind of protests will continue happening every few years as long as the left is put at an institutional disadvantage compared to the right. For the short term, I think minor tweaks in legislation (e.g. police and judicial reform), together with good timing and a de-escalatory strategy by the president can make these protests stop. But the US's institutional problems would remain.
