The album sold quite well and was very acclaimed by critics. But the songs they decided to release as singles before the album was mismanaged. It's crazy to call an album a flop if it still sells that much it's first week. And don't bring up "compared to 1989 standards" every pop star has one album that sells tremendously well and see a decline in sales after.
