The Grammy's are racist and they don't matter

maybe that's because she makes r&b music? a large percentage of her discography IS r&b or rap, do you want them to give her best country album or sumn?

But when you're the leading artist in r&b and rap, it's easy for judges to just nominate the popular black artist to win in those categories. But they get left out for the top prize that matters despite constantly being nominated. They acknowledge they're good albums, oh but not as good as this safe bland white band or white pop singer, I relate more to them

does OP know the labels/artists themsleves select the category they gonna submit the album for

its not like the Grammy's decide album x is Pop and album y is r&b :rip:

i do agree that minorities generally are very underrepresented at the Grammy's, but you chose to give artists as an example who've got an enormous amount of awards already

The Grammys tend to move artists to categories they feel make more sense all the time. Labels will submit, but Grammys change where things go.

Yes it does. Best urban contemporary album is a joke category just to give black artists an award. It doesn't even make sense and the category wasn't even a thing until years ago. Also black artists have a history of being labeled r&b when they make pop music. Or how white singers would have an r&b sound and still be labeled as pop. I already went over this in the op.

I don’t like when people throw around words like racist just to make their point. Obviously the Grammys are not racist. Otherwise there would be no black artists there. And black artists have been celebrated there many times! You can’t just label them racist because you think that certain artists are above others. Basically you are  saying that black artist should be entitled to major awards because YOU think they are more innovative.

Tbh if you didn’t use the word racist right in your title your argument would have held more weight.

I'm focusing on black artists especially because it was black musicians that had a lot of critical and commercial success yet were still ignored for the top awards. And rap music is the defining genre right now that still ignored no matter how popular it is.

and asian artists don't? bts are one of the single most successful artists in the world right now, gaining number one albums literally everywhere and selling millions. yet they were snubbed. i cannot think of a black artist that was snubbed to the degree of bts.

Childish Gambino won over Shallow last year and we all know which was the superior song. Plus it’s evident that you only care about black people since nowhere in your essay you mention people of other races that are constantly snubbed in America. I can name countless black artists who have been awarded left and right but can you tell me who was the last Asian person to win a general field Grammy or a best actor/actress oscar? The hypocrisy.

Yes, Gambino's song was superior.

I think you are treating a subjective conclusion youve drawn as an objective fact. I am not saying i disagree but this is something that goes back to personal preference and taste.

The grammys are the music awards for US and to am extent anglosphere, they have pretty much ignored people from other places.

It happened with Lizzo. They bumped her to pop solo performance this year.

They do matter. If artists think they dont then they should stop submitting their works for nom consideration.

Also @DiskoBaby it kinda pointless to talk about racism here cause most will sweep it under the rug unless it very blantent (sometimes they'll sweep it under the rug even then). Very few have the nuance to talk about it meaningfully but a las

perhaps the grammys don't think any of beyonce's albums are good enough to be nominated?

this is the exact attitude that large swathes of the beyhive have; if beyonce isn't nominated, then it's racism. no. numerous black artists have been nominated for awards and HAVE won. i cannot think of a recent album of the year winner that did not receive critical acclaim. it isn't like they're awarding mediocre albums, all of the albums they award (at least recently) have metacritic scores above 80 and positive reviews from pretty much every reviewer. a lot of things are race issues, but beyonce's lack of grammys (she has 25... plenty to prove that the grammys think she's worthy) is not a race issue.

Sayamama and MOTS: 7 will be completely snubbed, even in pop categories :saladga:

the truth is that the grammys simply don't award for critical success, they award for commercial success, then pick an 'alternative' album like golden hour every couple of years to make them look good

If Chromatica wins AOTY, BLACKPINK will technically be the first Korean act to win so I guess we will need to promote Chromatica a lot.
