From all of her last singles if we can call them that I like nro and hih... But I don't think there are big bichances of this becoming a big hit if we look at how her last few songs did on the charts

She shouldn't have said it was KP5. She should have said from an upcoming project. Because if it flops, it is algood you can slap it on an ep or something and ignore it. And it adds speculation and makes people more curious ultimately boosting sales. Taylor Swift hasn't announced the album or a project with her lead single in a while and that's gone pretty well.

I think that's the point. Katy tried releasing not one, not two, not even three.. but FOUR singles without tying them to a project and they all flopped.

Tying it to a new era fans have been dying for seems to be a last resort move at gaining hype for the single.

she just needs to do something different to draw everyone's attention. Releasing a high budget mv probably won't do that for her (unless there's something scandalous, which in turn could end up being damaging for her image). A high profile collab might do it depending on the loyalty of the fan base. Good luck to her

She just needs a traditional bop. I really like Smile - could be a great summer jam if they put the finishing touches on the demo and maybe swap Diddy out.

exactly, cause that's what she is know for, that's what people like, and that might be bad to say but it is true and if she wants to chart well again that's what she needs to do even if it is just for the lead and then build on that and re-engage the gp

Kind of surprised at how some people on here are interpreting the date. While the timing is interesting in the streaming era, I read it as wanting to get ahead of Gaga because a Gaga/Ari or Gaga/Blackpink collab will probably suck up a lot of the oxygen/potential streams/purchases from Katy.  The labels, etc. often know or hear rumors about when people are releasing, so I'm assuming Gaga may be dropping a single on the 22nd.

TLDR: It comes across less like a "pit two songs against one another to raise publicity" a la the new Doja/Meg situation, and more like "Katy's struggled with charting recently, so better get her out in front of a potential smash single since all of the artists (Gaga/Ari/Katy) have an overlapping fanbase."

I think Taylor and Katy hinted at a collaboration around the time Calm Down came out. Everyone thought there was going to be a Katy feature on Lover but it didn't happen. So hopefully on Katy's, although the collab could've just been the video cameo.

Guess what delulus, neither Katy nor Gaga are at the same place they were in 2013. Neither of them are as popular as they were back then to even make such a thing possible again. They will both be completely fine. Like seriously stop. And artists are not checking 24/7 to see when Gaga will release so they can do so too. 

Meh, I absolutely believe labels (not artists) generally try to avoid overlap in the streaming era. Very few artists now release at the same exact time, or within a week of one another, compared to pre-streaming. The Doja/Meg thing was unusual & I almost wonder if it was "planned" that way by one of their teams to try and get some publicity.

So I kind of get why people would raise an eyebrow at the timing. However, I really doubt Gaga and Katy's teams are trying to do some kind of "stan war/b*tch fight/competition" for the tabs to pick up on for free publicity—both are past that point in their careers. What makes the most sense, imo, is that Katy has been struggling lately with charting & her team may have heard that Gaga's dropping a single on the 22nd....so they decided to drop her single beforehand, instead of waiting a while, to avoid losing potential streams/purchases to the Gaga/Ari fanbase.
