The official version of FW is going to sound different unfortunately :(

How do we know? It’s supposedly shorter in length but is the production different?

1. I agree that we can't know for sure.

2. "A little mastering" to the drums is just not something that happens :air: Mastering is the final stage. I think you're probably trying to talk about mixing here. What you've described is normal, but if you're working on a mix and you finalise an element to audio, you're still working within the mix. Stems mastering is when everything has been done and you export to stems (fully finished, no editing) and then master with stems rather than a simple two-track audio file. But what you're talking about is categorically not mastering.

3. Elitist? :what: I can't even. I just don't like people using terms they don't understand. You won't find me talking about some specialist terms I know nothing about :sharon:

4. Mastering is literally the final stage in producing a demo. Slapping a limiter on a demo you're exporting hardly counts as mastering. I would never tell a client of mine that something had been "mastered" just because of that. Nor would I tell them the drums had been "mastered" when I'd just bounced them to audio and perfected them - that's mixing, especially as part of a mix with other sounds unexported and still being worked on.

5. The point is that people using these terms when they don't understand them means they aren't communicating correctly. If all they understand by mastering is "finished", what's stopping them using words they actually do understand to say that "I think the instrumental is more finished than the vocals" :emma:

I'll elaborate on that part step by step for you since apparently I have to. When I say "a little" it's because its usually a wip master not my final one. I will mix down my drums, bass and synths separately. I may not have my final mix decided for the synths or bass - but I am sure of the drums. So with my tracks I go and master them all so I can master my drums for the time being. Then I will use that rough master to think if I want to add or change anything for the synth or bass and then adjust as such if see it needed and then come back with a new mixdown and repeat the mastering for those tracks. So I may have then 2 mastered stems but one that I am reworking the mix for and using my already mixed stems as a guideline to help me envision my final mix. So once I do that, I will then go export the new mixdown for the synths and work on mastering it with my already done tracks replacing my "demo" synth stem I previously mastered. Then typically once I do that mastered how I want I will go and work again on ALL the stems to get my FINAL master. Not gonna lie is it a conventional way to handle it? Hell no! But for personal projects I still prefer working that way because it means I get less frustrated and hit less mental walls when working on my final master so in the end it saves me time.

On point 5, If you know what they mean though and they all know what they mean there is no reason to go after them for the terms. They're just casually discussing a song on a Gaga forum - they are not a client so there's no chance of the misuse of words causing a miscommunication that affects you in any way other than "this annoys me". Policing their discussion because you don't like the terms they use to have it just means they will be less likely to talk about that aspect or just not contribute over all. Even if they aren't discussing it perfectly, the discussions are just as important because it generates interest in the topic and maybe someone is talking because it's something that interests them. But if you swoop in and discredit what they're saying with a long paragraph saying why they're wrong for talking about it it can discourage them. You can just ask for clarification of "Hey do you mean the mix or the master?" if you need to and really want to. But just complaining about how people are wrong isn't constructive. This is something that you never know if you accidentally deterred someone from fostering their interest in all aspects of production and engineering because they felt stupid once. We owe it be more forgiving.

That being said because at the end of the day "Free Woman" as a mixed and mastered track wont technically exist until May 29th. No matter what methods they might have used it still has gone through various more iterations. But that being said if people who only have some knowledge of the process want to discuss the way it sounds in terms they can easily communicate about the process then it's not needed for the discussions to be essentially shut down over what their terminology or full understanding is. It's best to just let them take interest in the process of the mixing and mastering of the song and just ignore it if they use one as a catch all term.

All said and done, no shade or hate! I just don't want to see people stop talking about the creation of "Free Woman" because they got scared of saying the wrong thing. It takes time to learn the processes and what they mean when you're on the outside of how it may work and getting frustrated over it just isn't fair. We all were the ones that didn't have full knowledge once before and made others frustrated and that's not a good feeling and can make you feel like you have nothing to say on the topic - even if you do and it may be a little off. That's all my point really is.
